Opening Day Defeat For Benyon’s Boys

On Sunday August 26th, 11 of the Performance Phase players and 2 first team players faced Llandudno away in the first Welsh Premier Development League match of the season, writes Steve Benyon.

The game saw a number of 15 and 16 year olds play in their first competitive fixture, but we made the worse possible start conceding 2 very poor goals through our own mistakes.

Lewis Rees responded with a great strike from the edge of the box to see us go into the half-time break 2-1 down. After a few stern words by myself and Si Smith, the second half started slightly brighter as we created numerous chances but were surprisingly wasteful in front of goal, and we were once again punished with another defensive mix-up to fall 3-1 behind.

We kept on probing and were rewarded with an injury time goal through Ben Clark, but couldn’t find an equaliser, which saw us lose our first game 3-2.

Credit to Llandudno and Mark Orme for frustrating us and capitalising on our mistakes. We all agreed at full time that the performance and decision-making at times were both totally unacceptable and the players needed to respond quickly in order to adapt to the changes they were now facing in adult/youth football.
