On Sunday, September 2nd 2018, 13 of the Performance Phase players faced Rhyl at home in the JD Welsh Premier Development League (North) fixture, writes Steve Benyon.
The players knew myself, Si (Simon Smith) and Jase (Jason Brindley) were looking for a reaction after last Sunday’s disappointing performance and result.
The starting 11 controlled proceedings, playing the ball out from the back, as well as switching play effectively and entering the final third, against a Rhyl side who had 10 behind the ball.
To give credit to Rhyl though, they defended well and frustrated the boys into shots from distance, but we were rewarded for our patience with a neat finish from Owen Jones.
The score remained 1-0 at the break, and the second half started much the same, with the players totally dominating possession, with the Rhyl goalkeeper making some smart saves.
Tomos Williams found the net with a towering header, but we couldn’t manage to add to the scoreline. It was nice to get the win and clean sheet, but myself, the management staff and players all agreed that there is a lot of work to be done.
Full time training starts this week, which will allow us to work more closely with individuals as well as units.
Wednesday (September 5) sees two squads travel to Swansea to play Gower College, before another home game next weekend against Cefn Druids.
