Steve Benyon reports on this week’s EDS (Elite Development Squad) games as well as previewing Sunday’s JD Welsh Premier Development League (North) fixture at Newtown AFC.
EDS 1 Squad vs AFC Fylde
On Wednesday September 19th, 12 of the Performance Phase players faced AFC Fylde away in the first league game within the ECFA Category 1 Region A league.
It was a chance to provide a number of debuts to first year players. The squad was altered slightly after performance phase players CJ Craven and Harry Bower played 90 minutes for the first team the day before against Wolves Under 23s, alongside James Parry, Liam Parry and Cal Jones gaining 20 minutes.
The Fylde facilities were fantastic (lead image), but the weather proved a challenge straight away due to the wind and the rain, and 3 mistakes saw our young side fall 3-1 behind after a goal from Liam Parry. It was disappointing to go into the break 3-1 behind, especially after we created 5/6 golden opportunities through fantastic wing play, but at any level you can’t concede the way we did.
The second half saw the players come out the blocks very quickly and we were rewarded with a second goal from Ismail Ozdemir. We huffed and puffed, but again made disappointing mistakes, which resulted in chances missed and a fourth goal conceded, to end the game 4-2 to AFC Fylde.
Upon reflection, perhaps it was a step too far for some of the players at this stage, but we will re-group and prepare appropriately for Lancaster and Myerscough next Wednesday at the venue, 1.15pm ko.

EDS 2 Squad vs Everton Foundation College
On Wednesday September 19th, 13 of the Performance Phase players faced Everton Foundation College at home in a competitive friendly. It was a chance to provide valuable game time for the players, as well as looking for a reaction and positive performance to make themselves available for Sunday’s game and next Wednesday’s Cat 1 home game.
The team led by Si (Simon Smith), Jase (Jason Brindley) and Connor (Roberts) dominated proceedings throughout, playing attractive football from the back, through the thirds, and created numerous goal-scoring chances.
We found ourselves 4-0 up, through goals from Ethan, Harley, Cam and Tom, and were unfortunate to concede a last minute goal, to finish 4-1 victors.

After Sunday’s impressive performance against Flint, we go into Sunday’s away fixture versus Newtown in good spirits, after another good week of training and games.
The boys will prepare for the game by participating in an A license session led by Sarge (Chris Seargeant), and assisted by myself, Si, Jase, Kieran (Lee-Birch) and Connor.
We are looking to go on a run now, to try and bridge the gap in points between ourselves and the top 2, and once again will prove to be a difficult challenge to leave players out.
Hopefully ITC’s would have come through also. Come and support us down at Newtown, 2pm ko.
Newtown have started the season brightly and we all know we have to be at our best to ensure we leave Latham Park with 3 points.
