On Sunday September 23rd 2018, 14 of the Performance Phase players faced Newtown AFC away in the Welsh Premier Development League (North) fixture, writes Steve Benyon.
The players knew myself and Si (Simon Smith) were looking for another positive performance after last Sunday’s strong team outing against Flint.
The starting 11 controlled proceedings from the off, playing the ball out from the back with ease, as well as switching play effectively and entering the final third countless times, however without testing the visiting goalkeeper.
We dominated proceedings and didn’t provide Newtown with any clear cut chances, due to our well-organised shape and discipline out of possession.
A moment of magic right on the stroke of half-time saw a great through ball played by Lewis Rees into Tai Jones, who faced up the goalkeeper, shifting the ball outside then inside, before finishing well to hand us a 1-0 half time lead.
Again the second half saw the players control large spells of possession, without really being troubled, as well as creating half-chances, with the game finishing 1-0 to TNS.
What was great to see today was the players playing with more desire and being together as a team to help and encourage one another. We managed the game very well, and we didn’t force the ball forwards and instead tried to be patient in possession to draw the opposition out which worked extremely with with decisive split passes.
We now move onto another big week with games against Lancaster in the Category 1 league and Newcastle Under Lyme in the Colleges Trophy.
