It’s Been A Good Week For The Elite Development Squads

EDS 1 Squad vs Newcastle Under Lyme

On Wednesday October 10th, 14 of the Performance Phase players faced Newcastle Under Lyme at home in the third League game within the ECFA Category 1 Region A league.

It was a chance to continue where we left off, a week ago, beating the same opposition in the final of the regional 7-a-side tournament.

The squad fell behind within the first minute after a mistimed back pass. However after this the players dominated proceedings but just couldn’t score and went into the break 1-0 down.

After some inspiring words from coaches Simon Smith, Jason Brindley and Connor Roberts, the boys came straight out the traps and played some scintillating football scoring 6 goals, through Liam Parry (2), Tomos Williams (2), CJ Craven and Harry Bower.

We hit the post a number of times and missed some big opportunities to further increase the lead, but the game finished a convincing 6-1 victory. This sets us up nicely for next week’s top of the table clash away to Fowler Academy.

EDS 2 Squad vs Stoke-On-Trent

On Wednesday October 10th, 13 of the Performance Phase players faced Stoke-On-Trent away in the first League game within the ECFA Category 2 league.

The boys, along with myself and Kieran Lee-Birch, were keen to get off to a positive start against an unknown team.

The pitch proved to be difficult, but the players for the first 30 minutes adapted superbly well, moving the ball around with confidence and combing well in wide areas.

The hard work was rewarded through a goal from Owen Williams, but we then conceded from a set piece to go in at half-time 1-1.

The boys were disappointed from conceding and not converting the chances that they had created, but we managed to score a further 4 goals while conceding 2.

We ended the game worthy 5-3 winners, through further goals from Harley Steel (2), Cam Brookfield and Oliver Mitchell-Gough.

At full-time the players admitted that more work was needed especially on game management and the manner with which we conceded, but against a team littered with 2nd and 3 years, overall we were all happy and can now focus on next week’s cup game.

Looking Ahead

After today’s impressive performances, we now turn our immediate attention to recovering and preparing for Sunday’s Welsh Development game at home to Bangor City.

A few players will naturally drop out due to Saturday club loan commitments, as well as a number of players coming back into the squad, but the message will remain the same…be ruthless and clinical in both boxes.

As a club we want to go into every game desiring to win. Fingers crossed we have a number of players available from ITC.

We are expecting a difficult game as both games last season were evenly contested, but we go into the match, with hopefully a few surprises in store.
