Would Exercise Provisions For Older People Help You, Or Someone You Know? If So, Support The TNS FC Foundation’s Aviva Community Fund Bid

The New Saints FC Foundation is asking for your help to support their Aviva Community Fund bid.

The Community Fund offers organisations the chance to secure funding for important causes in the community and if successful, The Foundation plans to use the grant to finance their Active Saints initiative.

Active Saints aims to provide a range of opportunities for older men and women living in North Shropshire to exercise while socialising, improving their health and mental wellbeing in the process.

If the bid was successful, The TNS FC Foundation would work with local community organisations, such as village hall committees and social housing providers to offer weekly exercise and social activities.

The activities would take place in a minimum of six villages/locations across North Shropshire, where we have previously provided activities and can demonstrate demand for more.

There will also be a clear focus on providing sustainable social activities which people enjoy and core strength exercise activities will be woven in to the sessions.

Over 19,000 older people in Shropshire suffer falls each year and many are reluctant to participate in exercise programmes for various reasons.  It’s known though, that many older people are also lonely, and so enjoy the social aspect of group classes.

The Foundation hopes that through this project, they could provide regular opportunities for older residents to socialise and exercise in friendly and accessible locations.

Shelly McGlinchey, The TNS FC Foundation’s Healthy Living Co-ordinator said:

“We’re really excited about this proposal.  Here in the Foundation, we work with people aged from 3 years to 103 years.

If we are successful in our proposal, we will be able to offer regular, friendly, social activities for older residents who will also be able to learn essential muscle strengthening exercises. That will hopefully mean they can stay active for longer, and minimise their risk of falling as they get older.
