FAW WELSH YOUTH CUP 2ND ROUND

PLAYED AT CAE-Y-CASTELL, MARSH LANE, FLINT

SUNDAY 4TH NOVEMBER 2018

MATCH REPORT BY DAVID FIGG

After being given a walkover in the 1st Round due to scheduled opponents Cefn Albion being unable to raise a side, The New Saints Under 19 team finally got their hopes of FAW Welsh Youth Cup glory off to a winning start as they won 3-0 away to fellow JD Welsh Premier Development League (North) side Flint Town United U19s in their 2nd Round clash at Cae-y-Castell on Sunday.

Saints had gone into the game on the back of a 7-1 home win over Caernarfon Town U19 at Park Hall Stadium the previous Sunday which had taken their winning run to 4 games to leave them in 2nd place in the table, 3 points behind leaders Cefn Druids but with a game in hand.

Meanwhile, Flint had gone into the game on the back of 2 straight league defeats which had left them 3rd from bottom in the table.

Saints eventually took the lead in the 35th minute when Alex Cadman’s low long slightly diagonal ball from middle to right found James Rutter, who took a touch before sending a low through ball to Matt Cole who timed his run into the box perfectly to beat the offside trap before firing his first time right foot shot into Flint keeper Kieron Feenan’s right hand corner.

It was 2-0 right at the end of the 60th minute when Cadman’s low through ball on the left found Ismail Ozdemir who took a touch before crossing low to the near post where Cole tapped his left foot shot into Feenan’s right hand corner.

It was 3-0 in the 79th minute when a Flint defender’s back pass towards Feenan saw Rutter chase down the keeper before firing his left foot shot from 6 yards into the centre of the net.

It was a good solid performance by Saints against a good Flint side who put in an equally battling performance but it’s Steve Benyon’s side who go through to the 3rd Round.

Saints: Lewis Dutton, Matt Cole, Alex Cadman, Aaron Lloyd, Liam Ihekwoaba, Ethan Short, Josh Bailey, Finley Jeffries, Alex Brownhill, James Rutter, Ismail Ozdemir.  Subs: Harry Woledge (for Brownhill 64), Owen Jones (for Short 75).

The draw for the third round (last 16), pairs TNS FC with Newtown AFC. The game will be played at Park Hall on Sunday, November 25 2018 with a 2.00 p.m. kick-off.
