MATCH REPORT BY DAVID FIGG
The New Saints Under 19 kept up their challenge for the JD Welsh Premier Development League (North) title with a 3-1 home win over Bala Town Under 19 at Park Hall Stadium on Sunday.
Saints had gone into the game on the back of 4 straight league wins (plus a 3-0 away win over Flint Town United in the FAW Welsh Youth Cup) which had left them in 3rd place in the table, 2 points behind 2nd placed Airbus UK Broughton with leaders Cefn Druids a further point ahead but with Saints having played a game less.
Meanwhile, Bala went into the game on the back of a 2-3 home defeat by Airbus which had left them in 6th place out of 11 in the table, 3 points behind both 5th placed Bangor City and 4th placed Connah’s Quay Nomads (who were only separated on goal difference).
Saints took the lead in the 14th minute when Ismail Ozdemir’s free kick from the left found Tai Jones whose right foot flick was parried to his left by Bala keeper Dan Goldston and as the Bala defence stood and watched, Louis Bradford reacted quickest to tap his right foot shot from 2 yards into Goldston’s right hand corner.
It was 2-0 in the 47th minute when Matt Cole picked up a loose ball on the left and took a touch before crossing to the far post where Ozdemir’s first time lay back found Alex Cadman, who took a touch before firing his left foot shot from 20 yards into Goldston’s left hand corner.
Then just into the 60th minute at the other end, Joe Edwards’ low ball through the middle found Rhys Rowlands who ran forward before sliding a through ball to Tom Watkin-Jones, who was fouled inside the box by Cadman while attempting to shoot. Referee Patrick Wilding said penalty and after Cadman was yellow carded, Josh Jones stepped up to fire the resulting spot kick past Saints keeper Lewis Dutton (goal time 61).
It was 3-1 in the 88th minute when Bradford’s long ball over the top down the middle found the suspiciously offside-looking Tom Williams, who beat George Rose for pace on his way into the box before firing his right foot shot from 8 yards into Goldston’s left hand corner.
Saints’ win and results elsewhere have left Steve Benyon’s side still in 3rd place, 2 points behind 2nd placed Airbus with leaders Cefn Druids a further point ahead although the leading duo have both played a game more than Saints.
