The name Lee Phelan will need no introduction to fans of Welsh domestic football, especially so in the north of the nation. Having spent most of his playing career in the Huws Gray Cymru Alliance turning out for the likes of Buckley Town, Gresford Athletic and gap Queens Park, Lee went on to feature in the top flight with Cefn Druids.
In addition, he claims fame to having won the Welsh National League Premier Division with five different teams. Having moved from football to futsal in recent years, we asked Lee how the switch came about.
“I first got involved in futsal about six years ago, when I entered a team in the Friday night league in Brymbo. It moved to Glyndŵr and we won nine league titles in a row’ he told us, before adding that his side had reached the Welsh Cup on three occasions. “In addition, I’ve also played for Wrexham Futsal, where I won the Welsh Cup.”
Continuing to recount his personal journey in the world of futsal, Lee continued: “I took a break for a while but then The New Saints asked me to sign and I jumped at the chance.”
Describing his appointment as captain recently as being “made up”, there was more to come when he received a call-up to the Great Britain squad. “It came out of the blue and I want to thank Andrew Ruscoe for recommending me to the GB team.”
Lee flies to Italy with the squad shortly, with a game against the host nation on December 8 followed by a Switzerland encounter a day later.
When we asked him what was the highlight of his futsal career to date, he went for winning the Welsh Cup with Wrexham. With such exciting opportunities ahead though, we feel that even that memorable experience will be eclipsed sooner rather than later.
Everyone at The New Saints FC wishes Lee all the very best for the upcoming games in Italy and we look forward to bringing you more news in due course.
