Academy Report – The TNS FC Academy Celebrates Christmas

The days leading up to Christmas are always magical for youngsters and we embrace that at The New Saints FC Academy, writes Jason Brindley.

Recently, our Foundation Phase enjoyed the Christmas parade and being on the TNS Community Foundation’s Float, which goes through Oswestry Town Centre.

Training becomes a little lighter with teams focusing on fun and small games as we start to unwind prior to the festive break. As well as this, all of our Academy age groups, from Under 7s to U16s, enjoyed an evening of Christmas fun at The Venue, Park Hall, on Tuesday last week.

All of our groups enjoyed a two course Christmas Dinner and games of bowling, as a thank you from ‘us to you’, for their commitment and dedication to our Academy Programme up to this stage.

Christmas is the time for giving and it’s good to give something back. It was great to see all of our players in their Christmas jumpers along with their coaches.

We split the Academy into two groups due to the numbers and it was really good to see a lot of our age groups together at the same time, mixing.

We strive to build that family feeling at TNS and also one of togetherness. We want to be seen as one – one team, not 10 different groups.

We thank The Venue for hosting our evening and also for giving all player a Christmas selection box.

The weekend prior, we concluded our Fixture programme pre-Christmas. Again, we were fortunate to travel to St. George’s Park, playing at the home of the English National Team, but with different teams this time, in the indoor dome. It was another great experience for our Academy youngsters.

I was fortunate enough to have a little run myself in the indoor dome a couple of years ago when I was on a Coaching Course with the FA and it is very impressive.

Our Under 8s and Under 9s travelled to Deeside to play their first Futsal date, being unavailable for the previous one. It happened to be one of the coldest days of the year but that didn’t stop our youngsters enjoying the event.

Like mentioned in previous reports, I enjoy the Futsal format of small sided games as the amount of touches you get is so many more than larger formats.

Our U12s and U14s completed their second Futsal date at Deeside Leisure Centre and again enjoyed the event. Both age groups have played very well and go into the final contact in a couple of weeks in a good position to qualify for the Finals.

On behalf of The New Saints FC, I would like to thank all players and parents for their support to our programme thus far this season and wish them all a very Merry Christmas.
