We don’t need to dig too far into the past for this one – and we certainly don’t need reminding of the result either. It was November 9, 2018, when Caernarfon Town came, saw and conquered, as they recorded a 1-0 victory at Park Hall in the JD Welsh Premier League.
The Friday night defeat under the floodlights meant that, following an identical scoreline the week before at Aberystwyth Town’s Park Avenue, The New Saints recorded the unusual situation of back-to-back league losses.
Although there was plenty of possession for the reigning champions, the 1-0 reversal saw Scott Ruscoe’s side slip to fourth place in the league.
It was a third of the way through the game when Aeron Edwards had the perfect opportunity to break the deadlock. Rounding the keeper, the covering defender managed to block the effort and keep the score at 0-0.
Both sides created chances in the second half but the real drama was reserved for the final minutes. With 84 on the clock, a foul in the penalty area saw the referee point to the penalty spot as well as producing a straight red for on loan Swansea City defender, Ben Cabango.
Things went from bad to worse, as up stepped Nathan Craig to convert the penalty, giving his side a lead, that in spite of The New Saints throwing everything at them, they held.
