The New Saints Ladies slipped to a 4-0 defeat in their FA Women’s Division 1 Midlands meeting with Wolves Women at Park Hall this evening.
The hosts had chances, but ultimately it was a Tammi George goal, alongside a Jade Cross hat-trick, which condemned them to defeat.
It was Wolves who started the match the brightest and the visitors had an early chance with just four minutes on the clock, as a great breakaway down the right side presented Jade Cross with a chance on goal. The number nine showed great composure to place the ball beneath the outrushing Sarah Parkes, but the effort struck the foot of the post.
Although the away side saw most of the ball in the early stages, TNS looked dangerous on the counter-attack. With 10 minutes on the clock, Lawrence Wilson’s side broke away following a Wolves’ corner and Emily Ridge spotted Maddie Elbro off her line. Ridge attempted a chipped effort from distance, though couldn’t keep the ball on target.
The deadlock was broken with 24 minutes played, when a long, searching ball split the TNS defence, giving Jade Cross a clear run on goal and she made no mistake as she lobbed the ball over Parkes to give her side the lead. 0-1.
And Wolves continued to look threatening as the half progressed. A goal line clearance from Caitlyn Smith prevented Cross from grabbing her second and Tammi George sent a snapshot over the crossbar from 10 yards out just a minute later.
The second goal had been coming and it was finally found four minutes before half-time. A free-kick down by the right corner flag was sent into the area and it was flicked on by a TNS head. The ball fell kindly to George at the back post and she finished off an easy header to double her side’s lead. 0-2.
Starting the second period in the same way they ended the first, the victors went close with juts three minutes played. A delicate chip into the penalty area played Jade Cross in, although she couldn’t keep her first-time effort on target and it went high over the crossbar.
Wolves Women did eventually make their pressure pay though, as they went 3-0 ahead with 56 minutes on the clock. A great cross from the right side by Jess Jennings was met on the edge of the six-yard-box by Jade Cross, who coolly headed home her second goal of the night.
And soon after, Cross almost had a hat-trick. After showing some great skill to keep the ball under pressure from the defence, Cross took the ball around the goalkeeper before looking to shoot. The ball ran slightly away from her however, and she could only find the side netting with the shot.
The Saints still had chances of their own and it took a great save from Maddie Elbro with 69 minutes on the clock to prevent the hosts from getting a goal back.
Wolves were soon back on the front foot though and it took great defending from Erin Taylor this time, as another TNS goal line clearance prevented the visitors from scoring a fourth.
With just six minutes to go, Cross finally did get her hat-trick. After being played in by a great through pass, it was an easy finish for the Wolves’ striker as she slotted the ball past Parkes to make it 4-0.
There was late drama with just a minute of normal time remaining as Wolves’ Natalie Widdal was shown two yellow cards in quick succession, forcing the visitors to play the remainder of the game with 10 players.
