The New Saints FC v Barry Town United – The Last Time We Met

Supporters, players and staff alike won’t need reminding of the last time that the sides went head-to-head, as Barry Town United came from 2-0 down to earn a point at Park Hall.

The JD Welsh Premier League (JD WPL) game, in February 2019, saw The New Saints of Oswestry Town get off to a perfect start. With less than one minute on the clock, great thinking from Kurtis Byrne gave the home side the lead, as he spotted the keeper off his line and chipped the ball into the back of the net.

Pressure from the reigning champions paid off in the 20th minute, as a cross from Danny Redmond was met by the current JD WPL Player Of The Season, as Jamie Mullan made it 2-0.

Looking to be cruising to a comfortable three points, the visitors were back in the game at the one-third stage, courtesy of a penalty that many considered to be controversial.

As we approached the final quarter of an hour, The New Saints were down to ten men, as Tom Holland received his marching orders. Sensing an opportunity to grab an equaliser, Barry raised their game.

It looked like Scott Ruscoe’s side had done enough though to take all three points, but an added minimum of five minutes at the end of the game became seven, just enough for the visitors to equalise with a thunderbolt free-kick that gave Paul Harrison no chance.

Final score: The New Saints FC 2 Barry Town United 2
