The Last Time We Met – The New Saints FC v Caernarfon Town

As far as JD Welsh Premier League (JD WPL) games are concerned, once we split the most recent encounter between sides isn’t that long ago. That’s the case with Saturday’s (April 20, 2019) visitors to Park Hall, Caernarfon Town, as it was less than two months ago when we made the trip to The Oval on a Monday evening.

However, although quite recent, it was nevertheless a key moment in the season for The New Saints, as the 3-0 victory saw us return to the top of the table for the first time since October.

It was the perfect start for visitors when Kurtis Byrne opened the scoring with just four minutes on the clock. Played in by Jamie Mullan, the Irish striker showed great technique to beat the keeper from close range.

As the clock ticked down for the half-time break, a Jon Routledge effort from the edge of the box gave the reigning champions a 2-0 lead in the 38th minute.

Goalkeeper and captain, Paul Harrison, very much a spectator for much of the game was called on at the two-thirds stage of the game. Not for the first time at The Oval, H denied the home side with some tremendous work between the sticks.

It was game set and match though in the 81st minute when substitute, Billy Whitehouse, picked out Greg Draper inside the box. The cross, from the left, was converted by the current JD WPL golden boot, who made it number 18 for the season.
