Connah’s Quay Nomads 0 The New Saints FC 2
We don’t have to go back very far for this one – March 9 to be precise – but what a massive game it was for both sides. With Connah’s Quay Nomads leading the way at the top of the JD Welsh Premier League, three points for Andy Morrison’s team, although not settling anything mathematically, would certainly have dented TNS FC’s hopes of securing an eighth successive title.
The talking point before the game though was the absence of a striker on the pitch for the visitors. A desperate gamble or a stroke of technical genius? Although eyebrows were raised elsewhere, those of us who observe Scott Ruscoe at work were in no doubt as to where we pitched the decision.
An opening goal from Aeron Edwards, who got on the end of a through ball from Danny Redmond, put The New Saints in front in the 14th minute.
With 18 to go, Jamie Mullan found Ryan Brobbel, who edged the reigning champions into a 2-0 lead, a scoreline which was to stay that way come the final whistle.
Just four minutes on from the second goal, Connah’s Quay were down to ten men when ex-TNS striker, Mike Wilde, received a straight red card for his lunge on Jon Routledge. Although the challenge was crude, fortunately for the midfielder, he was able to walk away without consequence.
