The New Saints FC 3 Caernarfon Town FC 1
JD Welsh Premier League
April 20, 2019
We go back to April of this year for the last encounter between the sides, as Caernarfon Town were the visitors to Park Hall in the penultimate game of what was then the JD Welsh Premier League.
The New Saints went ahead in the 12th minute, as great work down the right from Billy Whitehouse found Jon Routledge. His cross was met by Kurtis Byrne, who made no mistake with his header.
The lead was short-lived though as Darren Thomas levelled the scores just seven minutes later. Beating the on-loan Cardiff City defender, Jack Bodenham, his shot hit the post before ending up in the back of the net.
Thomas almost put his side in front in the second period, but thankfully for TNS, this time his shot went the right way after striking the woodwork again.
With twelve minutes to go, it was the home team who took the lead again though, as once more a ball from Routledge – this time finding Greg Draper – was tucked away.
In the final ten minutes it was all over, as Whitehouse and Routledge combined to find Byrne in the box. The Irish striker made no mistake as he grabbed his second and TNS’ third.
Following the game, The New Saints FC players and staff presented with the JD Welsh Premier League trophy – now JD Cymru Premier – making it eight consecutive titles.
