Although Scott Ruscoe stated in his post-match interview with TNS TV that he wasn’t happy with the performance, nevertheless he will more than satisfied with three points in the opening JD Cymru Premier game of the season.
Both sides had chances, but come the final whistle, the 1-0 result puts The New Saints at the right end of the table. Just one game gone, of course, but one of just four teams with a 100% record.
Although just the one scored at the other end, the defence again registered a clean sheet, sending out a message that they intend to carry on as they did last season.
With just one game played, The New Saints is just one of three clubs that has not conceded a goal. The others – Cefn Druids and Newtown AFC – were involved in a 0-0 at Latham Park on Friday evening.
When a free-kick was awarded to the reigning JD Cymru Premier champions, just outside the penalty area and positioned to the left, who else stepped up but Brobz.
Over the wall, past the rooted goalkeeper and into the back of the net, the 27th minute strike not only broke the deadlock but also proved to be the match winner.
Fourth in the table
A win margin of two goals or more would have put The New Saints at the top of the pile on goal difference. However, the team currently sits in fourth place after MD1, behind Aberystwyth Town, Bala Town and Barry Town United.
That won’t trouble Scott Ruscoe, of course, what will count as far as he is concerned is that we won with a clean sheet.
268 days unbeaten in domestic football
The heading tells the story, as the victory ensured that the unbeaten run continues. The last time The New Saints tasted defeat was against Cambrian & Clydach in the Nathaniel MG Cup last November.
