Congratulations to The New Saints FC’s Youth & Communities Co-ordinator, Wayne Greenshields, who’s been selected to represent Wales in a major international FootGolf competition this weekend.
The Tri Nations tournament is an annual event, bringing together players from England, Wales and Scotland, and thanks to Wayne’s achievements, The New Saints will be represented this year too.
After enjoying FootGolf as a hobby, playing with friends and family on a regular basis, Wayne began to take the sport more seriously in October of last year.
The New Saints’ fan engagement manager decided to enter the winter series – a seven series event which included more than 50 competitors.
He finished in an impressive 2nd position on the amateur circuit, ranking him in overall 12th place.
Buoyed by his showing in his first competition, Wayne registered for the Dragon Tour. This time an eight series event, it saw him face challengers at courses all over the country, including Ruthin, Anglesey, Abergele, Shropshire, Aintree and Hereford.
With seven of the eight match days completed, Wayne sat in eighth place out of 50 contestants.
Unfortunately though, Wayne was forced to miss the final round due to his work commitments with The New Saints FC Foundation, who were running activities at the Oswestry Show, meaning his missed out on important points and slipped to 8th in the rankings.
However, his performances have seen him called up by the Welsh national squad and he’s set to represent his country in the Tri Nations competition this weekend at Abergele’s Silver Birch Golf Course.
When asked about Wayne’s inclusion, Jen Broughall, the captain of the Wales side said:
“I’m really pleased to see Wayne make the Wales squad,” said Jen Broughall, Wales’ captain and UK number one female.
“He’s worked really hard all season to improve his game and I was delighted to call him up to the squad.
Before he heads off to the tournament, we’ve caught up with the man himself to find out more about his FootGolf journey. Check out the interview below.
Once again, congratulations Wayne, everyone at the club will be cheering you on to victory.
