It was in fact less than three months ago, when The New Saints last played Cardiff Metropolitan University FC. With both teams looking ahead to imminent European football, the friendly at Park Hall on June 21, provided an excellent workout.
Three days before, Scott Ruscoe’s side had travelled to Jenner Park for another friendly, beating Barry Town United 6-1 in the process. With a 13-0 victory against Pro Ethical Elite Football Academy and a 4-1 versus Ynys Môn, the results were going well for The New Saints.
However, it was the Archers who took an early lead, with Connor Roberts beaten for the first time in his personal pre-season game time, as a chip from Dan Spencer found the back of the net.
Just fourteen minutes later though, Greg Draper struck from close range to level the score. A further well-executed shot from the New Zealand international four minutes before the break ensured that the home side went into the dressing room with a 2-1 lead.
Two minutes into the second period and it was Greg Draper 3 Cardiff Met 1, as a ball from Jamie Mullan was tucked away neatly.
The final whistle meant that, as competitive European football beckoned, The New Saints’ record of 26 goals scored and just 3 conceded saw them on track as far as preparation was concerned.
