Having already played each other this season in the JD Cymru Premier, we only have to go back to September for the last time that the sides met. On that occasion, it was a happy Barry Town United team bus that made its way back to south Wales, as the Linnets recorded a 1-0 victory at Park Hall.
Although The New Saints started brightly, it was the visitors, courtesy of an impressive Evan Press strike, who took the lead in the 24th minute. Barry ‘keeper, George Ratcliffe, put in a good performance during the rest of the half, including pushing a goal-bound Ryan Brobbel effort beyond the post in the dying minutes.
With the home side enjoying plenty of possession and creating opportunities during the second period, they were denied on numerous occasions, including another great save from Ratcliffe. This time it was Routledge’s effort, that was heading for the top corner, which was tipped over.
It wasn’t all one-sided traffic however, as Gavin Chesterfield’s side had chances of their own. In the final minutes though, the reigning champions piled on the pressure, but Barry Town United held out for the three points.
The game was MD8 in the JD Cymru Premier, which meant that with one-quarter of the season gone, the south Walians had a four-point advantage over The New Saints.
Going into the MD16 fixture at Jenner Park this Friday (December 13), the tide has turned, with the latter five points ahead of the former. You can watch the game live on S4C or follow via the usual TNS FC Twitter account or TNS Radio. Kick-off is 8.00 p.m.
