The New Saints FC 2 Connah’s Quay Nomads 1
Just over a month ago – on January 18 to be precise – we wrapped up the first phase of the 2019/2020 JD Cymru Premier season by welcoming Connah’s Quay Nomads to Park Hall.
As the Nomads head into this Friday’s fixture at the Deeside Stadium with a one-point lead at the top, that was the position that TNS were in a month ago.
Going into the game, and looking to establish an early lead, within a minute of the initial whistle the visitors had the ball in the net. However, it was disallowed for a foul on ‘keeper, Paul Harrison.
Not to be deterred though, as we hit the quarter of an hour stage two ex-TNS players combined to put the visitors into the lead. A ball in from Callum Roberts on the left was met by Mike Wilde, who made no mistake as his header broke the deadlock.
Eleven minutes later, the Nomads scored again. This time thankfully though, from a TNS perspective, it was an own goal. A low cross from Jamie Mullan was met by Callum Morris, who deflected the ball past his own goalkeeper to level the score.
Scott Ruscoe’s side took the lead for the first time in the 69th minute, when Simon Spender’s shot took a deflection, as the reigning champions got their nose in front. That’s how the game ended, with the victory meaning the reigning champions began the second phase – known as the Conference Play-Off – with a four-point lead at the top.
Right at the death though, Callum Roberts – who had previously been on loan at Park Hall from Shrewsbury Town – had a glorious opportunity to rescue a point for the visitors. Unmarked at the back, unfortunately for him and his team mates his effort was well over.
This Friday’s game (February 21) at the Deeside Stadium has an 8.00 p.m. kick-off time and will be shown live on S4C. In addition, you can follow the game via our Twitter account, with commentary courtesy of TNS Radio. The link for the latter is on the home page of our website.
