During the half-time interval of last weekend’s JD Cymru Premier fixture against Barry Town United, we recognised our Academy Players of the Month for September.
Each player received a trophy, presented by first-team player Adam Hughes, and got the chance to spend the afternoon in hospitality.
Head of Academy, Jason Brindley, talks us through each of the winners below.
Under 7s – Mason Smallwood
I have been lucky enough to watch Mason’s improvement closely since joining in the trials. We are seeing improvements in his game throughout training and games, from all the information from a variety of coaches.
When I took the players for the festival at The Venue, Mason was one of the standout stars, scoring many good solo goals from running from deep positions and beating players with his quick feet.
I told him he reminded me of Yaya Toure the way he ran past the players – he may be a bit young to remember him though!! Well done Mason and keep up the good work.
Under 8s – Jamie Evans
Jamie has always had great technical ability, especially his dribbling skills and he has shown this at a high level consistently in both training and during matches.
Jamie has also noticeably improved his decision making which has stood out after a number of goals and many assists for his teammates.
Under 9s – Daniel Thelwell
The Under 9s Player of the Month for September is Daniel. DT has had a fantastic month, taking in all information from a variety of coaches and has been using it in games.
His ability to beat a player using his electric pace and power, as well as the variety of skills he possesses, means he is an exciting player to watch.
It’s fantastic to see him bravely transferring new skills into an opposed environment every week too. Well done DT!
Under 10s – Jack Parry
Well deserved for performances so far this season, making great saves and looking to play out. There’ve also been good reports coming back from goalkeeper training, which is an important part of development. Well done Jack.
Under 11s – Joe McKenna
Joe joined our team in the summer and has made a really positive impact. Joe is very calm in possession, has a good range of passing and is comfortable playing in a number of different positions.
We have been particularly pleased with how Joe has developed his positional understanding. In addition to the above, Joe is an ever-present at training and always has a fantastic attitude. Keep up the great work Joesepha!
Under 12s – Lewis Wynne
For September, the U12s Player of the Month is Lewis Wynne. Lew has been exceptional since coming in at the end of last season, and has taken in a lot of new information to adapt his game and adjust to the TNS style of play.
The way Lew plays with such freedom and energy is a pleasure to watch. His ability to rip a defender to shreds with his wide range of skills on both feet is frightening too. Well done Lew!
Under 13s – Thomas Hughes
Thomas has had a really good September. He has adapted to a change in formation well and has taken on information. He put in a couple of good performances against Liverpool Schools and Blackpool, as well as scored a screamer against Bala Town. Well done Tom.
Under 14s – Paris Gray
Paris thoroughly deserves September’s POTM award for our U14s. He’s slotted into a new position well and is really receptive to info, which is a dream for coaches that players are taking info in.
He has a great commitment to training and played a big part in our U14s group qualifying for the FAW Academy Cup Super6.
Under 15s – Owen Davies
Owen is instrumental for our U15s, with his tireless work rate and great attitude. Owen has been involved with our U16s age group and again has played a big part in their qualification for the Academy Cup Super6.
Owen continues to impress and improve and has scored some great goals in both training and matches.
Under 16s – Josh Lock
“Locky” has began the new season in excellent form and has played a crucial part in our performances vs Bala and Newtown.
Locky has been with our club for a long time and has an excellent understanding of our TNS DNA. Locky is fantastic at receiving the ball in-between the lines and creating goal scoring opportunities, makes good decisions in possession and can dominate 1v1 scenarios from all angles.
We have been really impressed with how he’s devolved his understanding of defending from the front recently as well as becoming more a leader amongst our group. Keep up the great work Locky.
Under 19s – Roman Allen
Some great performances from Roman this month, as he begins to look more and more like a complete centre back. He’s been working brilliantly in training and even scored a few goals recently.
Following the conclusion of the awards, Jason said:
“Congratulations to our Players of the Month for September. All players are picked for different reasons, whether that be attitude in training, overall work rate or performances in matches.
“It’s been an action packed month for our Academy, with our U12/14/16 age groups beginning their FAW Academy Cup campaigns and our Academy returning to their full-time programme.
“As a coach working with various groups, it’s great to work with these players and help their development on an almost daily basis. It is also important that we assist the personal development.
“Having so much contact with these players, we will naturally become even more of a role model, so it’s important that we continuously preach good morals and ethics.”
