Who Are We?
The New Saints FC plays in the JD Cymru Premier, which is the top flight of Welsh domestic football. Under the first-team, our Academy has been functioning for a number of years, alongside the Scholarship programme, which itself runs in conjunction with North Shropshire College.
In recent seasons we have increased the quantity of the programme, while at the same time developed the quality of the delivery.
Currently, we have more full-time staff than ever before, with the standard of the coaches extremely high. We have three UEFA A Licence coaches working with the Academy, as well as another two who have been accepted on the next course.
We have several UEFA B Licence coaches, two UEFA B Licence GK coaches and another who has been accepted for the UEFA A Licence GK course. A number of coaches have also completed the FA Youth Award.
To put it into context, the level of coaches is very high, as is the detail of delivery.
What is our Aim?
We treat – and develop – every player as an individual. No two players are the same, each has different needs and requires specific areas of attention. The coaches recognise the importance of understanding this from a holistic point of view and therefore training is tailored to meet the demand of the individual player.
We want to help players reach their potential and to support them on their journey. In recent seasons we’ve seen numerous individuals progress through the youth structure who have then gone on to play for our senior side. Others have moved on to English CAT1 and CAT2 clubs. We are extremely proud of everyone.
We have had players that have passed through our Academy and Scholarship set-ups who then do Sports Science degrees in university, with one individual receiving a scholarship in the United States as a result. It’s also very important that we develop the person as well as the player. We do this by teaching them life skills, that apply not only to football, but to life itself in general.
How do we accomplish this?
At The New Saints FC Academy, we have our unique TNS DNA, which is the core of everything that we do.
There is a clear methodology. Training is planned with our Game Model in mind, but also, as previously mentioned, to improve the individual. There is a different focus throughout the various age groups.
We have our TNS identity. This is our playing style. The way we play runs throughout the club, from the first-team right through to the youngest Academy age group. We teach players at a young age to be brave in their play and be prepared to take risk in return for reward.
There is a TNS culture that we develop, and this is one of professionalism. It’s about respect and creating a learning environment, yet within that framework remaining focused on the individual. The player is at the forefront of everything that we do, and we are there to help and support them.
The TNS mentality is also fostered. This is all about hard work over talent. We encourage everyone to work as hard as they possibly can. We teach them to do everything that they can, with the coaches helping them all the way. We give the tools but it’s up to the player to then use them.
When do we do this?
We run a full-time programme, from Academy Under-7s to Under-16s, leading into our Scholarship Programme (16-18 years of age).
We are based at our first-team stadium, which is located just outside Oswestry and close to the A5, in the village of Park Hall, SY11 4AS.
Our training programme runs from Monday to Saturday, with specific age groups training on designated evenings.
Our fixture programme is generally Under-7s -Under-11s on Saturdays and Under-12s-Under-16s on Sundays, although we do play midweek as well. In addition, the weekend schedule is also flexible.
Whilst the players enjoy training – and we do make it detailed and involved – nevertheless they have no greater joy than playing games, where they can put all that they have learnt into practise.
Our fixture programme is extensive, where we take on some of the biggest clubs around the UK, as well as those closer to home and, of course, in Wales itself. In addition, we enjoy regular tournaments in mainland Europe, where we compete against some of the top teams from around the world.
