Match report: Sam Wood

It was a bank holiday to remember for fans of The New Saints, who saw their side emerge 10-1 winners on an action-packed afternoon in Aberystwyth.

Having raced into a 5-0 lead at the break, Scott Ruscoe’s side showed no sign of letting up in the second period, adding a further five goals to their tally, with a number of players getting onto the scoresheet.

It’d be hard to believe by looking at the eventual scoreline, but the opening minutes of the match were far from easy from a TNS point of view.

Captain, Paul Harrison was called into action on several occasions, making key saves to stop the home side taking the lead.

Things improved for the visitors with seven minutes gone though, as Billy Whitehouse scored his first goal for the club, cutting back inside the penalty area and firing low into the bottom corner.

Despite falling behind, Aberystwyth continued to threaten calling Harrison into action once more, and seeing a cross turned onto the crossbar.

It was a lucky escape for Scott Ruscoe’s side, but one that they weren’t made to pay for, as Jon Routledge added a second for his side with 25 minutes gone.

And just three minutes later, The Saints had a third, as Billy Whitehouse spun with the ball in the box, before firing past Pennock in goal.

Dean Ebbe added The Saints’ fourth in the 32nd minute, before Adrian Cieslewicz completed the scoring with a fifth goal in the 38th minute, bringing an end to a rampant first-half.

With just seconds played of the second period, the home side thought they had a lifeline, as a first-time effort from Marc Williams snuck past Harrison to reduce the deficit to four.

But just two minutes later, The Saints regained their five goal lead from the penalty spot, as Billy Whitehouse found the bottom corner to complete his hat-trick.

The introduction of a number of substitutes brought about a disjointed spell of play, and for a long while, it seemed like the afternoon’s scoring was over.

But with 10 minutes remaining, the match suddenly sprung back into life.

It was unselfish play from Cieslewicz, who squared the ball to substitute, Greg Draper, giving the New Zealand international an easy finish to make it 7-1 to TNS.

And just like that, Draper had a second. A long, searching ball forward from Danny Redmond was inch perfect for the number 9, and he casually volleyed home from the far side of the box.

Two further goals followed. The first from Kurtis Byrne in the 86th minute, before Adam Hughes scored a sensational debut goal, cutting back and finding the far corner with just a minute to go.

The result leaves TNS in fourth place in the JD Cymru Premier, although just one point separates the top four teams.
