The New Saints slipped to defeat in their second match of the new JD Cymru Premier Season, as Bala Town ran out 3-1 winners at Maes Tegid.

Having lead 1-0 at the break through Dean Ebbe’s 31st minute header, the Lakesiders mounted a second-half comeback, scoring twice shortly after the restart, before adding a third four minutes from time.

It was a strong start from Bala, with Chris Venables seeing a header cannon back off the crossbar with just three minutes played.

Having made their intentions clear from the first whistle, the Lakesiders continued to put The Saints under pressure and Blaine Hudson was called into action several times, as he made key interceptions in the box.

Scott Ruscoe’s side started to grow into the game though and their best chance of the match came with 22 minutes gone. After being picked out on the left of the box by Jamie Mullan, Ryan Brobbel sent an effort curling inches wide of the far corner.

However, TNS’ pressure soon told, as with 31 minutes on the clock, Dean Ebbe popped up to meet a cross at the back post and headed his side into the lead.

The opening goal didn’t deter the hosts though and another ball went crashing against the crossbar six minutes before the break.

Whatever the message from Colin Caton during the interval, it certainly proved inspiring for his side, who kept Paul Harrison busy in the opening stages of the second period.

It was just five minutes after the restart before Bala got their equaliser, as a corner from the left was headed back across the penalty area, and a grateful Venables was waiting to turn the ball in at the back post. 1-1

And just four minutes later, the match turned on its head completely. A scramble in the penalty area saw the ball bobble around several times, before eventually landing at the feet of Louis Robles, and the Bala number 18 made no mistake in hammering home. 2-1

It was a good response from The Saints after falling behind, with Jamie Mullan showing some good footwork to win a free-kick, before Ryan Harrington saw a header cleared off the line.

Bala continued to threaten on the counter though, and Harrison had to be alert to tip over a snapshot from Robles in the 70th minute.

The next goal was going to prove crucial and it almost went the way of TNS in the 81st minute. A great cross from Simon Spender was met by the head of substitute, Greg Draper, in the penalty area and this time, it was The Saints’ turn to head against the crossbar.

It proved to be a costly miss for Scott Ruscoe’s side, as Bala wrapped up all three points five minutes later, as Venables grabbed his second goal of the game, smashing home from close range.
