The New Saints got back to winning ways with an impressive 2-0 victory over a Barry Town United side who’d previously won all six of their home league matches this season.

Greg Draper’s 76th minute penalty, followed by a powerful Joash Nembhard header three minutes later, ensured that Scott Ruscoe’s side won their first league match since October 20th, and returned to the top of the JD Welsh Premier League in the process.

First-half

The first chance of the game fell to Saints’ midfielder Jon Routledge. With just four minutes played, a free-kick into the box fell to the number six on the edge of the penalty area, who drilled a shot just wide of the right post.

There was a golden chance for Scott Ruscoe’s side to take the lead shortly after. After the home side struggled to clear the ball, it found Cieslewicz who crossed into the middle looking for Byrne. The Irish striker was there to meet it and it took a fantastic save from Mike Lewis to deny him at point blank range.

Another huge chance to open the scoring dropped to Aeron Edwards just a minute after the hour mark. After being picked out in the middle of the penalty by a Kane Lewis cross from the right, the midfielder couldn’t get enough power or placement on his connecting shot, and it trickled comfortably into the hands of Lewis in goal.

With just a minute of the first-half remaining, Kurtis Byrne had a further chance to grab a goal. After some good work by Jamie Mullan on the right, he played a ball across the centre to Byrne on the edge of the box. Like Edwards before him though, the effort was a tame one, only bringing a comfortable save from the home goalkeeper.

Second-half

The first chance of the second period fell to The Saints. Great vision from the lively Aeron Edwards saw him slip a low ball beyond the home defence, finding Kurtis Byrne. The striker went one on one with the out-rushing goalkeeper but was only able to find the side-netting with his shot along the ground.

Just two minutes later, Barry could have gone a goal in front. Southam-Hales brought a save from Saints’ goalkeeper Paul Harrison after the ball fell to him in the box, as the home side began to see one or two chances fall their way.

There was another scare for Scott Ruscoe’s side with 70 minutes gone. Ore good work from the home side around the edge of the penalty area saw the ball find its way to Jonathan Hood. He tries to beat Harrison with a first-time effort and it doesn’t fall too far wide of the post.

It was a 76th minute penalty that saw the deadlock broken. After Simon Spender was pulled back by Momodou Touray in the penalty area, the referee wasted no time in pointing to the spot, showing the on-loan Newport striker a red card in the process.

Substitute Greg Draper stepped up, and the New Zealand international made no mistake, firing home an effort that was too strong for the goalkeeper, and scoring his 12th goal of the season in the process.

It proved to be a quick-fire double for The Saints, as three minutes later, Joash Nembhard found space in the penalty area to power home a header following Adrian Cieslewicz’ cross from the left.

Two-nil was how it finished and the three points see The New Saints move back to the top of the JD Welsh Premier League table once more. Attention now turns to the Nathaniel MG Cup semi-final next weekend, as a trip to Cambrian and Clyadach Vale awaits.
