The New Saints picked up their first away win of the season, with a 3-0 victory against Carmarthen Town at The Oval.

Goals from Dean Ebbe, Jamie Mullan and Greg Draper ensure that The Saints move temporarily top of the JD Welsh Premier League table, ahead of other fixtures this weekend.

First-half

With just two minutes played, Adrian Cieslewicz almost made it the perfect start for his side. The winger did well to spring the offside trap, giving him a run in behind the defence, but his effort was cleared well and the danger was gone.

In what was a lightning start, both sides could’ve been ahead inside the opening five minutes. Danny Brookwell flashed a ball across the face of Paul Harrison’s goal for the hosts, but Darren Thomas failed to get any sort of connection that would have put it into the net.

The Caernarfon pressure was relentless as the match began, and Paul Harrison was called into action numerous times.

Firstly, a roulette turn from Jamie Breese got him past the covering defenders and the TNS goalkeeper needed to be alert to make a save low to his right.

Then it was the turn of Brookwell to go close. The Caernarfon man outmuscled Simon Spender on the edge of the box, giving him a one on one with the goalkeeper, but once more, Harrison made a great save.

The Cofis were made to pay for their failure to convert though.

With 43 minutes on the clock, Dean Ebbe popped up on the edge of the six yard box, calmly finishing off a cross from the right, and giving his side a 1-0 advantage at the break.

Second-Half

The hosts had a golden chance to bring the scores level five minutes into the second-half.

Paul Harrison pulled of yet another fantastic save to deny Bresse at point blank range, and the follow up effort was somehow missed the open goal and was blazed high over the crossbar.

The Saints doubled their advantage in the 59th minute, when Dean Ebbe played a perfectly timed pass to beat the Caernarfon offside trap.

Jamie Mullan was the beneficiary, and the number 14 did well to keep hold of the ball under pressure from the defender, before firing an effort low and beneath Alex Ramsey in goal.

Scott Ruscoe’s side began to take control of the game in the second period, enjoying a flurry of half chances.

Jon Routledge was involved on a couple of occasions, first seeing a low, driven effort claimed well by Ramsey, before firing a shot high over the crossbar from the edge of the box.

Coming off the bench with 15 minutes to go, last season’s JD WPL golden boot winner Greg Draper completed the scoring for TNS.

Following Caernarfon pressure, Blaine Hudson caused problems for the home defence as he sent a clearance long.

The home defender attempted to cushion a header back to Alex Ramsey, but he couldn’t get enough power onto it. The ball fell perfectly for the New Zealand international to lob the goalkeeper, and grab his fifth goal of the season.

The win sets The New Saints up perfectly for their return to the Irn-Bru Cup, as they host Queen’s Park in the competition at Park Hall next Saturday.
