The New Saints held on to top spot in the JD Cymru Premier, with a comfortable 5-0 Boxing Day win against Cefn Druids at The Rock.

After first-half goals from Danny Redmond and Adrian Cieslewicz had put Scott Ruscoe’s side in control at the break, Greg Draper showed no mercy, as he added a second-half hat-trick to reclaim top spot in the race for this season’s Golden Boot.

The win also means The Saints are now assured of a place in the top six for the second phase of the season.

As it often is with games involving The New Saints, it was they who started the brightest. With just four minutes gone, Jamie Mullan flashed an inviting ball across the face of goal, but there was nobody in a blue shirt to get on the end of it.

Cefn Druids looked lively themselves though, and some terrific defending from Blaine Hudson in the 12th minute stopped James Davies from getting a shot off on the edge of the penalty area.

Down the other end, Adrian Cieslewicz had two good chances to score, forcing a save from Michael Jones with his initial effort, before sending the ball the wrong side of the post with a sliding finish moments later.

The deadlock was eventually broken with 26 minutes on the clock however, when Danny Redmond’s superb strike from outside the box left Druids’ goalkeeper, Jones, with no chance, as The Saints’ number 10 scored his first goal of the season. 1-0.

Just four minutes later, TNS were causing problems for their hosts once more. Mullan weaved his way into the box, but some last ditch defending, as a number of players combined to deny him, stopped the champions from doubling their advantage.

They couldn’t hold on for long though, as Adrian Cieslewicz had Saints fan celebrating again with 35 minutes played.

After good work from Simon Spender down the right, the Wales Under-21 man picked out the former Wrexham midfielder at the back post, where Cieslewicz had an easy finish to add another goal. 2-0.

Ending the first-half brightly, The Saints began the second in the same fashion, as goalscorer, Cieslewicz, flashed an effort wide within seconds of the restart.

But Scott Ruscoe’s side didn’t have to wait for their third goal, as Spender provided for Greg Draper this time around, with the New Zealand international curling the ball around the outstretched arm of Jones. 3-0.

Draper was certainly in inspired form and almost had a second himself with 57 minute gone. After beating Nathan Peate with a great first touch, Michael Jones was out quickly to block the striker’s shot at close range.

There was to be no denying the TNS number nine in the 65th minute though, as Draper but the match out of sight by adding a fourth TNS goal.

After collecting Mullan’s pass from the right, the JD Cymru Premier Golden Boot turned with the ball, before sending a composed finish past the Druids goalkeeper.

And when Mullan was fouled inside the area, and referee, Simon Evans, awarded a penalty in the 70th minute, there was only one contender to step up and take it.

Completing his hat-trick in style, Draper sent Jones the wrong way with a well-taken penalty, making the score 5-0 on the day, and sending himself to the top of the JD Cymru Premier scoring charts in the process.

There could’ve been more Saints goals in the final 20 minutes, as Cieslewicz and Byrne both went close, but Scott Ruscoe’s side had to settle for five in the end, as they bounced back from last Friday’s defeat against Cardiff Met University in the perfect fashion.
