The New Saints returned to the top of the JD Welsh Premier League with a fantastic 2-0 victory against Connah’s Quay Nomads at the Deeside stadium

A warm-up knock to Kurtis Byrne meant Aeron Edwards replaced him in a late change, and it was Edwards who opened the scoring with 14 minutes played.

Ryan Brobbel added a second in the 72nd minute, wrapping up the win and extending The Saints’ unbeaten run to 106 days in the process.

The Saints had an early chance with just five minutes on the clock. A cross into the area from the left was headed out, with the ball dropping to Danny Redmond on the edge of the box. The number 10 attempted a first-time effort, though the shot went high over the crossbar.

Scott Ruscoe’s side did make the breakthrough with 14 minutes gone though. After replacing Kurtis Byrne as a late change in the starting 11, Aeron Edwards benefited from an excellent through ball from Danny Redmond. With Danby rushing out towards him, the Wales C international did brilliantly to fire an effort into the top right corner of the goal. 1-0.

Redmond was involved once again shortly after. Another cross from the left, this time from Ryan Brobbel, made its way to the number 10 in the area, although he couldn’t get enough power on his effort and it was a comfortable save for Danby.

Connah’s Quay had chances of their own though. With 29 minutes played, an inviting ball into the TNS area gave Adam Barton the chance to test Harrison with a header, but he couldn’t keep the effort on target, and it went out for a goal-kick.

And Barton caused problems for the TNS defence again just a minute before half-time. Breaking away down the left, it appeared as if The Saints’ defence was under real pressure, but it was superb defending from Tom Holland who tracked back to make a sliding challenge in the penalty area.

Andy Morrison’s side started the game brightly, and with just three minutes played after the restart, Jack Bodenham showed his defensive qualities as he made a crucial interception to stop Callum Morris picking out Michael Wilde with a ball across the box.

The TNS defence was a lot busier in the second period and Paul Harrison had to be alert to stop an effort from Jake Phillips with 64 on the clock. The substitute’s strike took a slight deflection, calling The Saints captain into action, but it was a smart save down to his right.

TNS remained dangerous on the counter-attack though, and with 72 minutes gone, Scott Ruscoe’s side doubled their advantage. The ball was played across the Nomads’ box to Jamie Mullan who flicked it on to Ryan Brobbel. The number eight did well to trap the ball, before finishing past Danby on the turn. 2-0.

And things quickly got worse for the Nomads. Just four minutes later, ex-TNS man, Mike Wilde, was shown a straight red card, following a lunge on Jon Routledge. Fortunately, The Saints’ midfielder was able to walk away.

Wilde’s sending off was the final incident of note, with the game becoming very scrappy in the final 15 minutes. A couple of half-chances for either side weren’t enough to impact the scoreline, meaning Scott Ruscoe’s side did eventually run out 2-0 winners.
