A Ryan Brobbel doubled helped The New Saints clinch this season’s JD Welsh Cup with a 3-0 victory against Connah’s Quay Nomads this afternoon.

Greg Draper opened the scoring at Cefn Druids’ Rock, before Brobbel saw two free-kicks deceive the keeper and head straight into the net.

It’s the first time that The Saints have clinched both the league title and Welsh Cup in the same season since the treble winning year of 2016.

Scott Ruscoe would’ve been hoping to see his side start quickly and that’s exactly what they did. With just seven minutes gone, Chris Marriott played in Adrian Cieslewicz down the left. He carried the ball into the box, before drawing a save from Nomads’ ‘keeper John Danby. He couldn’t get the ball to safety though and it dropped at the feet of Greg Draper, to stab home on the edge of the six-yard-box. 1-0.

The goal didn’t deter the Nomads and they certainly had the better of the period which followed, with Andy Morrison’s side going close on several occasions.

Firstly, ex-TNS man, Mike Wilde showed great technique to bring the ball down with his chest, before seeing his effort drop wide of the post.

Then, under pressure from Blaine Hudson, Jamie Insall went down inside the TNS area. That sparked penalty appeals from his teammates and supporters, but the referee waves away the protests.

The Saints’ defence held firm against strong pressure however and got their reward shortly after.

After a move down the left was brought to an end illegally, Ryan Brobbel stepped up to whip a free-kick into the area. But his cross was carried by the wind, catching Danby off guard, and the ball floated into the top corner of net net, leaving the ‘keeper stranded. 2-0.

The holders came out fighting in the second-half and could’ve had a goal back inside five minutes. The ball dropped to John Disney on the edge of the area and the defender’s driven effort was deflected inches wide of Harrison’s post.

As with the first period, Scott Ruscoe’s side held firm against the pressure and worked chances of their own.

It was great link-up play between Cieslewicz and Brobbel on the edge of the Nomads’ box, with the latter sending a curling effort towards the far corner of the goal. Danby was down quickly though, making a good save and this time, palming the the ball to safety.

At the other end, Wilde had another chance to find the net, as he worked space in the box. It was great defending from both Bodenham and Marriott though, who slid in to block.

Brobbel wasn’t to be denied for too much longer though, as he stepped up for another free-kick on the left. Just like his last, it went straight past the ‘keeper, and into the net – the bounce of the ball catching Danby out this time. 3-0.

And despite the odd flurry of Connah’s Quay pressure in the final half hour, that was enough to ensure his side clinched their first JD Welsh Cup win since 2016, completing the league and cup double in the process.
