Deeside Delight As Brobbel Wonder-Strike Sees TNS In The Final
Manager Scott Ruscoe saw his side qualify for the final of the Nathaniel MG Cup at Deeside Stadium, as Ryan Brobbel’s 34th minute strike was all that separated the teams at the final whistle.
In the first quarter of an hour, a good ball played in from the right by Routledge saw Fletcher head over, followed by Brobbel shooting high as he got on the end of a pass from Spender.
It was anything but a one-sided game however, and with twenty two minutes on the clock Roberts did very well to head the ball back to Harrison, as the home side pressed.
Moments later the action was at the other end, as a Fletcher strike from outside the box saw Rushton parry the ball, that was then cleared.
With the game just past the one-third stage, a free-kick saw Brobbel set up Holland, only for his shot to go wide.
Three minutes later though the deadlock was broken. Brobbel struck from outside the box as his shot smashed into the net, giving the keeper no chance.
The home side upped their tempo in the second half with Michael Bakare going wide, followed by a free-kick in a dangerous position on the edge of the box coming to nothing as the wall did its job.
Good work from Oyenuga down the flank saw his cross reach the ex-TNS man Mike Wilde, who saw his header go just wide.
It was then TNS’ chance to miss the target, as Draper and Brobbel interacted only for Mullan to shoot high.
With six minutes to go, the visitors had the chance to put the game to bed as Darlington fed Spender in the box. The keeper did well again though, as he kept his side in the game.
With 86 minutes on the clock, the Nomads had a penalty appeal turned away by referee Iwan Griffith. Wilde’s shot in the box was blocked, as last-ditch defending maintained TNS’ slender lead.
With two minutes of the added three gone, Wilde had an excellent chance to level the scoreline, but uncharacteristically the striker shot over from close-range.
Substitutions: Darlington for Draper (76), Pryce for Fletcher (81)
Yellow cards: Holland (64), Routledge (76)
The final will be played in January 2018 with details to be confirmed in due course.
