A Chris Seargeant hat-trick ensured that The New Saints comfortably defeated Cwmbran Celtic 3-0 to advance into the fourth round of the JD Welsh Cup.

After opening the scoring with a penalty, the Saints’ number seven added a second with 42 minutes played, before completing the scoring three minutes after half-time.

The win ensures that Scott Ruscoe’s side take their place in Monday’s fourth round draw, as they bid to lift the trophy for the first time since 2016.

It was a lively start from both sides, and Cwmbran had a couple of early chances inside the opening 10 minutes.

First, a dangerous home free-kick found its way into the TNS penalty area, before being headed just over Paul Harrison’s crossbar.

Then, good work from Josh Bull down the left of the pitch allowed him the chance to bring the ball into the area, but his touch was a heavy one and the ball got away from him.

With 22 minutes gone, a good ball down the left gave Kurtis Byrne something to chase. The Irish striker won the race against the defender, before he was brought down in the area by home goalkeeper, Lewis Watkins, and the referee pointed to the spot.

Responsibility fell to Chris Seargeant, who made no mistake in stepping up and dispatching the penalty into the left of the goal. 1-0.

Despite falling a goal behind, the hosts continued to cause problems.

A great ball down the left of the field set Bull away and he raced in behind the defence. Unfortunately for him though, he could only find the side netting with his driven effort at goal.

It was Seargeant himself who doubled The Saints’ advantage. After collecting the ball on the edge of the penalty area, the number seven went on a mazy run around several defenders, before his goal bound effort hit the left post and deflected into the back of the net.

With just three minutes gone in the second period, The Saints’ scored their third.

Great work from Kurtis Byrne on the right of the penalty area gave him the chance to cut the ball back into the box. Waiting in the middle was the grateful Chris Seargeant, who fired a first-time effort into the net to wrap up his hat-trick.

Despite both the gulf in score line and league position, Cwmbran continued to create problems. With 57 minutes played, Lewis Ellis whipped a cross into the TNS area from the right, but it was caught by the wind and went behind for a goal kick.

Scott Ruscoe’s side almost had a fourth in the 64th minute. A corner from the right was headed into the net by Blaine Hudson, but the referee spotted an infringement in the build-up, before disallowing the goal.

Substitute Josh Hmami split the defence well with a through ball to Dean Ebbe, who held the ball up for the incoming Kurtis Byrne. Byrne took a shot at goal, but rather comically, the ball was held up in the mud surrounding the goal line and scrambled clear.

Cwmbran could’ve grabbed a consolation goal in second-half stoppage time after the referee awarded them a penalty. Chris Ham stepped up, but his effort cannoned back off the crossbar, allowing Hmami to head the ball clear.
