Dean Ebbe grabbed a priceless 82nd minute equalising goal to send The New Saints through to the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League.

For the majority of the match, it looked as though Lincoln Red Imps would hold on to the opening goal they scored in the first-half and send Scott Ruscoe’s side out of Europe.

The number 17 was on hand though, latching onto Blaine Hudson’s header, to stab the ball home and give TNS a 3-2 aggregate win.

First-half

Lincoln had the first attempt of the match with 14 minutes on the clock. After collecting the ball on the edge of the penalty box, Diego Gamiz attempted to find the top corner, but his effort went high over Paul Harrison’s crossbar.

It was the home side that enjoyed all of the chances in the first half and caused danger with long throw-ins into the box. With 23 minutes gone, Joseph Chipolina launched one into the 6 yard box which caused problems, but Juanma failed to connect properly with his downwards header.

The trouble for TNS didn’t stop there though. Ben Cabango was caught in possession just inside his own half, launching a dangerous counter-attack for the home side. The on-loan Swansea City man would have been relieved to see Tom Holland get back to block a goal bound effort.

The Red Imps took the lead in the 41st minute. A corner from the left was whipped dangerously into the box, and on hand was Montesinos Romero who headed the ball past Paul Harrison and into the net.

That goal made the aggregate score 2-2 and meant The Saints were heading out on away goals.

Second-half

Scott Ruscoe made a change at the interval, bringing on Dean Ebbe in place of Kurtis Byrne, and almost instantly, the side looked more threatening.

But there was a huge let off in the 50th minute. Pedro Corral took the ball around Blaine Hudson, presenting him with a one on one chance with Paul Harrison. Miraculously though, the Lincoln substitute didn’t convert, putting his effort wide of the left hand post.

TNS grew into the match as the second-half progressed. A free-kick delivered by Chris Marriott was met by the head of Blaine Hudson, but the defender couldn’t get a strong enough connection on his header and it went harmlessly out for a goal-kick.

With 63 minutes gone, for the first time, Lincoln began to show one or two signs of vulnerability. Substitute Ebbe played a through ball in behind the defence to Edwards. He was forced to take the ball wide though, meaning he needed to try to pick out Mullan in the middle.

Unfortunately for him, Goalkeeper Manuel Soler was on hand to easily collect and bring an end to the attack.

You began to wonder whether it was going to be one of those nights – until the clock hit 82 minutes.

Blaine Hudson was forward following a corner, and in what was almost a role reversal of his goal last Thursday, he headed the ball back across goal and into the danger area.

Waiting in the middle was Dean Ebbe, who calmly stabbed the ball home, grabbing the crucial goal that gave The New Saints a 3-2 aggregate win and sent them through to the third qualifying round.

TNS will now face Danish champions FC Midtjylland at the Cardiff City Stadium on Thursday August 9th, with kick-off scheduled for 19:45.
