Match Report

Goals: Lewis (23), Byrne (34), Brobbel (63), Draper (85)
Substitutions: Draper for Byrne (65), Ebbe for Redmond (68), Routledge for Seargeant (70)

The New Saints got back to winning ways with a convincing 4-0 victory against bottom side Llandudno.

Goals from Kane Lewis, Kurtis Byrne, Ryan Brobbel and Greg Draper ensured The Saints left the north Wales coast with all three points, ahead of the busy Christmas period to come.

It was a quiet start to the opening period of the match, with neither side managing to register an effort on target in the first 15 minutes.

The strong wind certainly played its part, and it was particularly evident when Cabango sent a searching ball over the top of the Llandudno defence looking for Seargeant. After being held up in the wind, the ball was an easy one for the home defence to intercept.

The deadlock was finally broken with 23 minutes played. After collecting the ball on the left of the pitch, Kane Lewis rode several tackles, before striking an effort, which was too strong for Shaun Pearson, into the bottom left corner of the goal.

It took just 11 minutes for TNS to double their advantage. A foul by ex-Saints’ man, Kai Edwards, led to a free-kick on the left side of the pitch that caused problems for Llandudno.

They struggled to get the ball clear and following a penalty area scramble, Kurtis Byrne was on hand to turn the ball into the back of the net.

The start of the second period was almost a perfect one. After being picked out down the right by Chris Seargeant, Kurtis Byrne whipped a ball into the penalty area which was very nearly diverted into his own net by the Llandudno defender.

It took great defending from Ben Cabango with 55 minutes gone, as the on-loan Swansea City man timed a challenge well to stop Llandudno striker Alun Webb from getting in behind the defence.

Soon after, Scott Ruscoe’s side found the back of the net again. After picking up the ball on the edge of the penalty area, Ryan Brobbel took a deft touch to flick the ball around the covering defender, before firing a left-footed volley into the bottom right corner of the goal.

Perhaps looking ahead to the busy Christmas period, and with his side in control of the match, Scott Ruscoe opted to make three changes in six minutes. Kurtis Byrne, Chris Seargeant and Danny Redmond all departed the field, with Jon Routledge, Greg Draper and Dean Ebbe coming on as replacements.

It was the latter who almost benefited from Aeron Edwards’ excellent vision, but Ebbe was a fraction too slow to beat goalkeeper Shaun Pearson in the race for the ball.

Another substitute, Greg Draper, did eventually complete the scoring with five minutes to play however. The New Zealand international met a cross from the right with his head, diverting the ball into the back of the net, and scoring his 13th and his team’s 4th goal in the process.

The win keeps up the pressure on leaders, Connah’s Quay Nomads, as TNS bid for their eight consecutive JD Welsh Premier League title.
