Another Clean Sheet As Saints Take Home The Points – Llanelli Town AFC 0-2 The New Saints FC

Match Report

Goals: Edwards (9), Thomas OG (45)
Substitutions: Mullan for Edwards (53), Draper for Redmond (70), Byrne for Holland (74)
Yellow Cards: Redmond (36)

With just the one change – as Redmond came in for Mullan – Scott Ruscoe confirmed his pre-match press conference comment that he was taking the game seriously.

Defending the church end, with the wind in their favour, Llanelli Town AFC got us underway.

The first attempt on goal came from the visitors in the 4th minute, as a Chris Marriott corner was met by Joash Nembhard – who retained his place in the side from Tuesday’s win against Aberystwyth Town – only for his shot to fall kindly for Davies.

Immediately afterwards, a superb tip over the bar from Harrison denied The Reds an early lead. A great run from Loveridge then saw the number 11 stumble over the ball as he carved open an opportunity down the right.

In the 7th minute a powerful shot from Redmond was blocked by Davies, as the game ebbed and flowed from one end to the other.

Two minutes on though the deadlock was broken as Aeron Edwards took advantage of good work in the box to slot home as The New Saints took the lead. 0-1 (9)

The energetic Wales C international almost doubled his – and TNS’ – tally as he put the ball in the back of the net nine minutes later but the flag was up for offside.

As the JD Welsh Premier League champions continued their dominance of the first half, a ball played in by Marriott was met by a Spender header, which unfortunately for the right-back hit the post.

In a rare excursion into the TNS half, Loveridge’s pace momentarily beat Nembhard, but great recovery from the central defender ensured Harrison remained untroubled.

Back to business though for Ruscoe’s side and a long-range effort from Redmond rattled the post, as Llanelli continued to hold on to just a 1-0 deficit.

That continued as a Redmond free-kick rattled the bar in the 35th minute. As the clock continued to tick down, the ex-Hamilton Academical midfielder forced the keeper into a save, as Davies pushed his shot away.

In the 45th minute, the second goal finally came as a great run by Routledge down the right resulted in the ball finding the back of the net via a deflection from Thomas. 0-2 (45)

The visitors began the second half where they left off the first, as they dominated proceedings from the off with Harrison continuing his role as a spectator.

Penalty appeals were turned down by the referee as Cieslewicz went down in the box in the 63rd minute.

A long-range effort from Tom Holland then went wide as The New Saints looked to wrap up the game and the three points.

Intelligent play in the box from TNS, with several players involved, resulted in Llanelli clearing their lines once again as the visitors continued to press.

In their first serious attack on the TNS goal in the second half, in the 72nd minute, a Hudson header led to a corner, followed by the ex-Wrexham defender clearing danger from the kick.

Mullan then went close for the champions as he turned in the box setting himself up, only for his low shot to go wide.

The third of Ruscoe’s substitutes, Byrne, looked to score a spectacular goal as we approached the final ten minutes but his shot was over. This was followed a long-range Spender effort that the keeper parried.

Back in action in the dying minutes, Davies tipped over a shot from Routledge as The Saints couldn’t add to their first half tally.

In the end though it didn’t matter, as the fourth consecutive JD Welsh Premier League clean sheet and goals from Edwards and Thomas (og) ensured that the league leaders maintained their position at the top.
