Match Report

Goals: Draper (16, 61), Edwards (40), Mullan (44)

Substitutions: Cieslewicz for Spender (56), Darlington for Brobbel (62), Routledge for Draper (67)

For the second consecutive game, Scott Ruscoe made five changes to the starting line-up. And like Flint Town United on Tuesday, there were goals galore plus a clean sheet, as The New Saints of Oswestry Town beat Elgin City 4-0.

The Northern Ireland referee, Andrew Davey, got us underway as the visitors defended the stand behind the goal, housing their fans who had made the long journey from Moray.

The opening exchanges saw both sides looking to stamp their authority on the game. It was the 6th minute when a long ball from Brobbel found Draper and although nothing came of it, this signalled the beginning of TNS’ eventual domination.

Two minutes later, good work between Brobbel, Spender, Edwards and Seargeant again saw no goal as a result but the home side began to look the more likely to break the deadlock.

This looked the case with 11 on the clock, as a chip from Seargeant found Draper, who in turn found the net only for the assistant referee down TNS’ right to raise the flag.

There were appeals for a penalty just after as Mullan, weaving his magic in the box, went down. The referee was not convinced though, as the game began to be played more and more in the Elgin half.

The Saints got the breakthrough that had been coming though, in the 16th minute. A ball in from Rawlinson found the impressive Draper, who turned, beat Bronsky and then blasted it past Marc Waters in the Elgin goal. 1-0

Threatening to get a second, a shot from Brobbel was deflected for a corner, followed by efforts from the Northern Ireland U21 international again, and then Seargeant, as both went just wide.

With five minutes to go before the break, Ruscoe’s side got that all-important goal as good work down the left from Mullan saw his chip find the head of Edwards. 2-0

The provider turned scorer four minutes later as TNS increased their lead. Making his way into the box, the number 14 slotted past the keeper to ensure the home changing room at least, was a happy one come the break. 3-0

Brobbel again went close, minutes into the second half, as his shot was just wide of the keepers’ right post.

In the 54th minute, as Draper lurked in the box, Bronsky beat him to the ball as the The New Saints continued to take the game to the Black And Whites, as they are known, although on the day they wore their away kit of red and blue.

As Draper opened the scoring in the 16th minute of the first half, he also wrapped it up in the same minute of the second period. A ball played into the box from substitute, Cieslewicz, who made his way down the right flank, found the New Zealand international as he scored his fourth goal in as many days. 4-0

With a quarter of an hour to go, the visitors went very close to scoring a consolation goal. Allan broke down the right but his ball into the box ended with a tremendous interception from Rawlinson on the far side.

Although Elgin City never gave up, TNS continued to dominate possession and the final whistle meant that the champions of Wales go into Tuesday’s Irn-Bru Cup quarter-final  draw.
