The New Saints bounced back perfectly from their Irn-Bru Cup exit with a comfortable 6-0 victory against Aberystwyth Town.

A hat-trick from Aeron Edwards, goals from both Adrian Cieslewicz and Simon Spender mean Scott Ruscoe’s side remain top of the JD Welsh Premier League ahead of Friday’s trip to Llanelli Town.

It wasn’t long before The New Saints had lead, when a well-timed ball from Dean Ebbe got Aeron Edwards in behind the defence. Edwards made no mistake, delicately lofting the ball over the diving goalkeeper and putting his side 1-0 ahead with 15 gone.

The Saints continued to cause problems for the Aberystwyth defence as the half progressed.

Good pressure forced the Seasiders to play the ball back to Leigh Jenkins in goal and the keeper had to be alert to deal with the ball quickly.

A long forward ball from Blaine Hudson found the feet of Dean Ebbe, but the Irish striker was unable to get the ball out of his feet fast enough to make anything of it.

With 33 minutes gone though the home side had their second.

Adrian Cieslewicz weaved his way through the middle brilliantly before looking to shoot. He thought better of it and playing the ball right to Spender who finished the move, making the score 2-0.

It suddenly began raining goals at Park Hall.

Aeron Edwards grabbed his second goal of the game just four minutes later. The number 23 collected the ball on the edge of the box, and with the goalkeeper off his line, he showed great composure to chip the ball into the back of the net.

Edwards had a chance to complete his hat-trick just a minute later, as referee Cheryl Foster deemed an Aberystwyth challenge in the penalty area to be a foul and pointed to the spot.

Edwards stepped up, but it was a great save down to his left from Leigh Jenkins to keep the score at 3-0.

But it didn’t stay like that for long.

A cross from the left-hand side made its way into the penalty area, before being met in the middle and diverted towards goal.

It was hard to tell if it was Mullan or the Aberystwyth defender who got the final touch, but either way the ball was diverted past Jenkins to make the score 4-0 just before the break.

As the second 45 minutes begun, Blaine Hudson thought TNS should’ve had another penalty.

Making his way forward as part of a good passing move, the centre-back went down in the box under pressure, but the referee deemed it just a coming together.

It could’ve been 5-0 after 57 minutes. Jon Routledge carried the ball forward well through the middle, before playing a perfectly timed pass to Simon Spender.

The right-back looked to cross into the middle for Ebbe, but the ball was just a touch behind him and he couldn’t connect.

It was the same combination that lead to The Saints’ fifth goal. Spender again crossed for Ebbe, who this time was able to get a strong enough header to deflect the ball into the path of Adrian Cieslewicz, and the Polish winger stabbed the ball home. 5-0.

Aeron Edwards continued to push for his hat-trick. This time he rose high to meet a cross in the middle of the penalty area with 72 minutes played, but unfortunately for him, he couldn’t keep his header down under pressure from the Aberystwyth defence.

Edwards did finally get his hat-trick with six minutes to go. He was well placed in the centre of the box, as he smashed a volley past Leigh Jenkins and into the bottom left corner of the goal, giving his side a 6-0 lead.

The result means The New Saints keep their third consecutive league clean sheet and sit 3 points clear at the top of the JD Welsh Premier League table.
