The New Saints kept up the pressure at the top of the JD Cymru Premier with a 2-0 victory against Aberystwyth Town at Park Hall.

First-half goals from Keston Davies and Ryan Brobbel were enough to seal the points for Scott Ruscoe’s side, who temporarily move up to second place in the table.

It was the perfect start from The Saints, who were celebrating with just three minutes played.

When a lofted ball into the penalty area caused confusion amongst the Aberystwyth defence, it was Keston Davies who was first to react, and he calmly slotted home into an empty net to give his side an early advantage.

Buoyed by their positive start, The Saints continued to pile the pressure onto the visitors’ defence, with both Edwards and Redmond calling Alex Pennock into action.

TNS’ number 10 was involved once again shortly after, and almost doubled his side’s advantage. After working space inside the area for  shot, the former Hamilton man watched his effort come crashing back out to safety, much the the relief of the visiting defenders.

It was very much one-way traffic for the majority of the first-half, but the Seasiders did enjoy one or two chances on the break. In the 40th minute, Edmilson could’ve pulled his side back onto level terms, but could only find the side netting with his shot.

And it proved to be costly, as just three minutes later, The New Saints made it 2-0.

After being slipped in by Aeron Edwards, Ryan Brobbel did expertly well, as he rounded Pennock and sent a composed finish into the empty net, doubling his side’s lead right before the interval.

The second period continued in very much the same fashion as the first, with Scott Ruscoe’s side enjoying most of the early possession.

However, the Seasiders continued to battle in the match, and Blaine Hudson needed to pull off a bit of excellent defending, as he rose highest to clear the danger from a 56th minute corner.

Shortly after, it was the other central defender, Davies, involved, as he linked up with Ryan Harrington to bring another Aberystwyth counter-attack to a halt.

Ruscoe’s team continued to cause problems of their own though, and very nearly put the game out of sight in the 67th minute.

After Jon Routledge was a bundled to the ground, the referee awarded TNS a free-kick 25 yards from goal, and up stepped The Saints’ dead ball specialist, Ryan Brobbel.

And it was almost perfect execution from the number eight, as his strike cleared the wall, but much like Redmond in the first-half, he saw his effort come cannoning back off the woodwork.

The visitors kept going right up until the final whistle and there was a let off for The Saints 10 minutes from the end.

Substitute, Geoff Kellaway, was afforded space inside the box, and the number seven sent a driven shot narrowly wide of Harrison’s far post, much to the relief of the stranded Saints keeper.

That proved to the last action of the night however, as The Saints got back to winning ways and kept up the pressure on table-toppers Connah’s Quay Nomads.
