The New Saints booked their place in the quarter-final of the JD Welsh Cup, with a convincing 4-0 win against Aberystwyth Town at Park Hall.

First-half goals from Ryan Brobbel and Danny Redmond put Scott Ruscoe’s side in control at the break, before Dean Ebbe and Greg Draper added to the tally in the second period.

Attention now turns to Monday night’s quarter-final draw, which takes place live on S4C’s Heno at 7pm.

It was a lightning start by The New Saints, who came right of the traps on the front foot. With just four minutes played, the holders had the lead, thanks to superb work by Ryan Brobbel.

Taking the ball into his stride on the edge of the penalty area, the number eight cut inside, creating space away from his marker, before sending a great, curling finish past Pennock and into the far corner. 1-0.

And with 10 minutes on the clock, it could’ve been 2-0 to Scott Ruscoe’s side. Kurtis Byrne showed a great turn of pace to run away from the covering defender, but his effort was narrowly wide of the ‘keepers’ far post.

But just like that, The Saints lead was eventually doubled two minutes later. It was Byrne who turned provider this time around, as he squared the ball across the box from Danny Redmond, giving the former Hamilton man an easy finish from close range.

However, the visitors were by no means out of the game and remained dangerous on the counter-attack. In the 23rd minute, Keston Davies made a superb goal-saving clearance, as he raced back to intercept Touray’s effort on the line.

The Seasiders had another shot cleared off the line with 33 minutes played, Chris Marriott the man making the block on that occasion, but TNS did enough to hold onto their two goal advantage going into the break.

With 15 minutes in the dressing rooms with their respective managers behind them, it was Ruscoe’s side carving the early openings, just two minutes into the second period.

Brobbel showed excellent vision, slipping Byrne in behind the defence with a great ball, but the latter’s cross for Dean Ebbe was overhit and Aberystwyth escaped  with their goal unharmed.

Down the other end, Paul Harrison needed to be alert as he was called into action to deny Matthew Jones. The visitors’ number 17’s shot took a deflection on the way through as well, making the save by The Saints’ number one extra impressive.

It was a key stop too, as with 64 minutes gone, the JD Cymru Premier champions scored their third goal, putting the result beyond doubt.

Again it was Brobbel involved, this time sending a driven ball across the box which picked out Dean Ebbe. The Irish striker converted well, with his side footed finish leaving Pennock no chance, as he gave his side a comfortable 3-0 lead in the process.

Substitute, Greg Draper, added a fourth in the 81st minute, as The Saints made sure their dominance of the game was reflected in the scoreline.

After his initial header was saved by Pennock, the ball fell kindly for the New Zealand international, who acrobatically finish into the empty goal, as he wrapped up the scoring in style.

The visitors came close to a late consolation in stoppage time, but Paul Harrison made a superb penalty save, diving to his right to deny Matthew Jones, after Simon Spender was adjudged to have committed a foul.
