Match report by Stewart Bloor

With the reigning champions looking to continue the recent good run of form, Greg Draper and Danny Redmond both had efforts on goal in the opening six minutes, as The New Saints started the liveliest.

The pressure continued, as the first quarter of an hour saw the home side dominating the game, with Bala Town forced increasingly deeper into their own half.

By the halfway stage of the first period however, it was still goalless.

In the 26th minute, on a rare excursion into the final third, the visitors won a penalty following a trip in the area. Paul Harrison was equal to Henry Jones’ kick though, as diving to his left he kept the ball out.

Almost immediately, a break for The New Saints ended with Ashley Morris going low to deny Redmond at the other end.

Although Scott Ruscoe’s side dominated proceedings, the first half ended 0-0, as referee Nick Pratt blew his whistle following two additional minutes.

Within five minutes of the restart, a great run from Ryan Brobbel saw his shot blocked and then Dean Ebbe, with just the ‘keeper to beat, was denied, as once again Morris kept his nerve and did his job between the sticks.

Looking to grab his 143rd all-time league goal for The New Saints, it was Draper’s turn to go close next, as his header was saved comfortably by Morris.

However, you can’t keep a good man down for very long and in the 56th minute the deadlock was broken. A ball played in by Brobbel was met by the head of Draper, as he nodded beyond Morris and into the net.

Heading into the final quarter of an hour, although The New Saints maintained the tempo, it remained 1-0. Jon Routledge went the closest for the home side, with a power-drive from outside the box going just wide.

In added time it looked as if the Lakesiders had snatched an equaliser, fortunately though for the champions, although the ball was smashed past Harrison and into the back of the net, the flag went up for offside.

The final whistle ensured that not only did The New Saints secure the three points but also kept a clean sheet for only the second time in the JD Cymru Premier this season.

With Barry Town United playing tomorrow, it means Scott Ruscoe’s side moves into second place. In addition, a late penalty for Aberystwyth Town also denied a victory for leaders Connah’s Quay Nomads, as the game ended 1-1 at Park Avenue.
