Match report: Sam Wood

The New Saints slipped to their first domestic home defeat since November 9th 2018, as Barry Town United claimed all three points at Park Hall.

Having taken the lead through a superb Evan Press strike with 24 minutes played, some resolute defending throughout the remainder of the match made the result safe.

It means Barry now have a four point lead over the champions, with a quarter of the season complete.

Having started the match well, there was a blow for Scott Ruscoe’s side with just 17 minutes gone, when Kane Lewis pulled up injured. The number 22 was unable to continue, meaning, not just an early introduction for Simon Spender, but an early disruption to The Saints back four.

It didn’t appear to have an effect on The Saints though, as only a superb save from away goalkeeper George Ratcliffe stopped them taking the lead.

Just seven minutes later though, it was the visitors who were celebrating. After being teed up on the edge of the box, a fantastic strike from Evan Press left Paul Harrison with no chance, as he found the top corner to give his side the lead. 1-0.

The goal gave Barry confidence and Chris Marriott was called into action to deny Kayne McLaggon inside the area, as the visitor’s number seven shaped to shoot.

At the other end, chances fell the way of The Saints, as Brobbel hit the wall with a close range free-kick, before Edwards forced a save with a header.

And just five minutes before the break, Ratcliffe pulled off another spectacular save, tipping another Brobbel effort around the post.

It was a second period which followed a similar pattern to the first, but it was the visitors who saw the first chance after the restart fall their way in the 50th minute. Goalscorer Press caused problems again, but this time his effort went safely wide of the post.

Ruscoe’s side kept up the pressure on the leaders, with Kurtis Byrne seeing an effort blocked, before Harrington forced a save from the keeper from distance, but the Barry defence showed no signs of being breached.

And that was highlighted further in the 65th minute, when the impressive Ratcliffe pulled off a yet another top draw save. This time it was Routledge denied, as his top corner-bound effort was tipped over for a corner.

Although it was TNS enjoying the majority of the play, the visitors remained dangerous on the counter-attack and could’ve doubled their lead on 73 minutes.

A loose ball from Keston Davies was collected by the ever dangerous McLaggon, who raced in behind, but he couldn’t keep his shot on target. A let off for The Saints.

With the final whistle approaching, The Saints continued to bombard the Barry goal, and Cieslewicz saw an effort blocked for a corner, before substitute Greg draper saw a header easily saved.

However, there was no way through in the time that remained and the visitors took all three points back to South Wales.
