The New Saints slipped to their fourth league defeat of the season, after losing 1-0 against Caernarfon Town at Park Hall.

It was another evening of frustration for Scott Ruscoe’s side as plenty of possession didn’t result in any goals.

As Ben Cabango was dismissed in the build-up, it took a second-half penalty late in the game to give the visitors the lead, and although the 10-man Saints threw everything at the game towards the end, they just couldn’t find a way through.

It was a quiet start to the match for both sides with neither keeper being tested in the opening 15 minutes. TNS had one or two chances to get in behind the Cofis’ defence, but it was the flag of the assistant referee that prevented them for coming to anything significant.

Scott Ruscoe’s side continued to probe as the half went on, but great defending from the visitors was enough to deny any chances of note. The Saints continued to see all of the ball, but it was frustration as they took it into the final third.

The first chance of the match was a golden one. With 31 minutes played, a killer pass split the Caernarfon defence allowed Aeron Edwards to go one on one with the goalkeeper.

The number 23 did brilliantly to take the ball around the out-rushing Alex Ramsey, but his touch was slightly heavy, and the visiting defender managed to get back and rescue his side.

Chances started to flow for The Saints in the time that ensued. A corner from the right dropped to Joash Nembhard at the back post, and although he saw the ball late, he still managed to get his head to it. The connection wasn’t a clean one though and the effort went wide of the post.

The first chance of the second period went the way of the visitors. Gareth Evans got the ball out of his feet quickly in the 52nd minute before firing an effort wide of the TNS goal.

It was a scare for The Saints’ keeper Harrison, who dived to cover the goal, as he wasn’t to know it was heading wide.

It wasn’t long before Caernarfon caused more problems. The away side worked the ball into the box well before cutting it back. The resulting shot was blocked on the penalty spot before the referee awarded TNS a free-kick.

The Saints went so close themselves soon after. A good corner from the right-hand side was met by the head of substitute Dean Ebbe but he could only divert the ball onto the crossbar.

Things got dramatically worse for Scott Ruscoe’s side with 84 minutes gone. Caernarfon weaved their way into the penalty area well, before a foul from Ben Cabango resulted in the referee pointing to the penalty spot.

To make matters worse, The Saints number five was shown a red card in the process, just moments before Nathan Craig converted the penalty to give his side a 1-0 lead with minutes to go.

That was to be the final nail in The Saints’ coffin, as although they threw plenty at Caernarfon in the final few minutes, they couldn’t find the equalising goal.
