Match report by Stewart Bloor
As with the previous friendly, The New Saints FC took on another JD Welsh Premier League (JD WPL) European-bound side. Following the midweek game at Jenner Park against Barry Town United, this time round it was back to Park Hall, with Cardiff Metropolitan University FC the visitors.
The home side – wearing the familiar green and white kit – got us underway, with Connor Roberts defending the car park end.
It was the visitors who took an early lead through – in the third minute – as a headed ball back to Roberts lacked weight. The resultant chip from Dan Spencer found the back of the net, with Roberts beaten for the first time in the current pre-season campaign.
Fourteen minutes later, the reigning JD WPL champions were back on level terms, when current Golden Boot and New Zealand international, Greg Draper, put the ball away from close range.
With The New Saints dominating as far as opportunities were concerned, it was no surprise when Draper scored his second of the game, with a well-executed shot from inside the box.
The goal, in the 41st minute, ensured that Scott Ruscoe’s side went into the dressing room with a 2-1 lead, having recovered from the early setback.

With less than two minutes of the second period played, it was Greg Draper 3 Cardiff Met 1, as a ball into the box from Jamie Mullan was controlled perfectly by TNS’ number 9, who again gave the keeper no chance as he gave his side a comfortable lead.
As we passed one-hour stage of the match, The New Saints created further chances, as they continued to take the take game to the Archers.
Meanwhile, several substitutions by Scott Ruscoe, gave the manager the opportunity to look at not only squad players but also trialists.
Apart from Draper’s early strike, no more second-half goals followed, which meant that the final score of 3-1 to The New Saints, ensured that the 100% pre-season friendly record continued.
With 26 goals scored and 3 conceded, Scott Ruscoe certainly has much to be happy about, as we edge closer to the first competitive game of 2019/2020, in the UEFA Champions League.
