Match report by Sam Wood

Cardiff Met University brought The New Saints’ run of five consecutive wins to an end with a 2-1 victory at Park Hall.

After Joel Edwards had given his side a 1-0 lead inside the opening five minutes, TNS fought back to equalise through Ryan Brobbel.

Will Evans restored his side’s lead five minutes before the break however, and despite numerous Saints second-half chances, that’s how the score remained come the final whistle.

It was the worst possible start for Scott Ruscoe’s side, who found themselves a goal down inside the opening five minutes.

Following a well-worked short corner on the far side, the ball reached Joel Edwards on the edge of the six-yard-box, and the number 14 finished well, with a back heel flick, to put his side in front. 1-0.

The goal sprung The Saints into life, and Aeron Edwards sent a couple of dangerous crosses into the Cardiff Met penalty area in the minutes which followed. Unfortunately for those in green and white though, there was nobody to get on the end of them.

However, TNS did get their equaliser with 16 minutes played, when, after Adrian Cieslewicz had beaten his man well inside the Met penalty area, the ball found its way to Ryan Brobbel.

At the first time of asking, the number eight smashed an effort into the roof of the net, leaving Will Fuller with no chance at all. 1-1.

Buoyed by the leveller, The Saints kept up the pressure on the Archers’ goal, and Fuller needed to be alert, as he got a crucial hand to the ball to divert it away from the onrushing Ebbe.

It wasn’t long though until the visitors were celebrating again. With 39 minutes gone, an unfortunate slip by Ryan Harrington allowed a long ball from Edwards to reach Will Evans on the edge of the box, and the Met number nine made no mistake, drilling a composed effort beneath Paul Harrison. 2-1.

Just minutes after the match resumed, Cardiff Met could’ve doubled their lead. Goalscorer, Evans, was left unmarked in the area, but much to the relief of those in green and white, he couldn’t keep his header down, after he was picked out by one of the other Evans, Elliott.

At the other end, Brobbel whipped a free-kick into the area, but it came to nothing, before Dean Ebbe forced Fuller into a good, close range save, as Scott Ruscoe’s side pushed for a second equaliser.

The Saints’ continued to press and Fuller was in action again, pushing a Brobbel free-kick wide of the post with 62 minutes played, before Cieslewicz failed to hit the target from distance.

In the 68th minute, again the Northern Ireland Under-21 international caused problems, as he shrugged off the covering defender, before sending a powerful strike onto the roof of the net.

Turning to his bench for inspiration, Ruscoe introduced Greg Draper two minutes later and the JD Cymru Premier Golden Boot was involved immediately.

Cardiff Met somehow survived though, as Draper failed to get the ball out of his feet when it dropped to him four yards from goal, and the visitors managed to scramble it clear.

The Archers continued to defend well, frustrating numerous TNS attacks, but it looked like the champions had stolen a point in the dying moments. After taking a long ball over the top into his stride, Jamie Mullan beat Fuller at his near post, however, only to turn around and see the offside flag raised.

It was the final chance of the game for The Saints, but there was still time for goalscorer Edwards to be show a stoppage straight red card, after raising a hand to the face of Davies.
