The New Saints hit Cefn Druids for seven at Park Hall, as they made up crucial ground in the title race.

With Connah’s Quay Nomads falling to Bala, Scott Ruscoe’s side made no mistake in taking advantage, as a Ryan Brobbel hat-trick, Kurtis Byrne brace, a Jamie Mullan goal just before the break and a stoppage time effort from Greg Draper gave the Saints a late Christmas present, in the form of a 7-0 win.

First-half

Druids’ goalkeeper, Michael Jones was called into action for the first time with just five minutes gone.

After Aeron Edwards’ searching ball found its way to Danny Redmond, The Saints’ number 10 sent an effort goalwards that Jones was forced to tip around the post.

It didn’t take too much longer for The Saints to make the breakthrough though. Just five minutes later, Ryan Brobbel showed great skill to take the ball around several defenders inside the Druids’ penalty area before his effort took a deflection and beat Jones in the goal.

And Scott Ruscoe’s side wasted no time doubling their advantage. With 18 minutes gone, Kurtis Byrne made an excellent run in behind the defence, and great vision by Simon Spender allowed him to pick out the Irish striker. The number 21 made no mistake with his finish, as he converted the ball beneath the outcoming goalkeeper.

Almost instantly though, the visitors could’ve been level. Playing left-back this afternoon, Danny Redmond did brilliantly to get back and clear a goal-bound effort off the line.

Things got even better for The Saints four minutes before half-time. Jamie Mullan did well to beat the offside trap, before showing great composure to take a good touch and finish an effort down to Michael Jones’ left, making the score 3-0.

Second-half

Just like the first-half, it was a fast start to the second period. After launching a fast counter-attack from a Druids corner, Tom Holland picked out Kurtis Byrne expertly with a searching forward pass, as the number 21 finished brilliantly with a first-time effort to grab his second goal of the game with 52 minutes played.

Despite finding themselves four goals to the good, Scott Ruscoe’s side showed no sign of letting up. Another good pass from The Saints’ midfield found Ryan Brobbel in space down the left. The winger, perhaps buoyed by his earlier goal, came very close to floating an effort into the far corner of the goal, though it was difficult to tell whether it was a cross or shot.

As the half continued, it was TNS who dominated most of the match. After being introduced as a substitute for Aeron Edwards, Greg Draper almost added a fifth for his side. After the ball bobbled around in the area, it dropped to the New Zealand international on the edge of the six-yard-box, and it took a great save from goalkeeper Jones to deny him.

The Saints continued to push forward and did eventually get their reward in the 90th minute. An excellent cross from Danny Redmond on the left landed perfectly on the head of Ryan Brobbel at the back post, and the Northern-Ireland under-21 international nodded home to complete his second hat-trick of the season.

That wasn’t the end of the misery for Druids though. Just one minute later, Simon Spender picked out Greg Draper with a ball and the striker wasn’t to be denied this time, as he made it seventh heaven for The Saints.
