The New Saints lifted themselves into second place in the JD Welsh Premier League with a comfortable 5-0 victory against Llanelli Town.

Goals from Dean Ebbe and Greg Draper followed a Kurtis Byrne hat-trick – of which, the third goal was a spectacular bicycle kick.

The win means Scott Ruscoe’s side are now just one point behind leaders, Barry Town United, as Phase Two of the campaign gets underway.

The Saints took the lead after just seven minutes. Simon Spender showed good control on the right side of the penalty area, taking the ball into his stride, before delivering a dangerous cross towards the middle. It was a perfect for Kurtis Byrne, who was in the right place at the near post to divert the ball first time past the goalkeeper.

The Llanelli goal continued to be peppered by The Saints as the half went on. Just three minutes later, Aeron Edwards leaped well to meet a cross, diverting the ball towards far post, but it dropped just the wrong side of the post from a TNS perspective.

The second goal did eventually come in the 37th minute. Just like the first, it was the combination of Spender and Byrne which came good once more, with the former again crossing for the latter, who made no mistake in heading past the goalkeeper.

Two nil was how the two sides entered the half-time break, although it could easily have been more in favour of TNS. In the five minutes before the interval, both Jon Routledge and Danny Redmond had chances to find the net.

The former stung the palms of Coughlan in the 41st minute, before the latter went very close to curling a free-kick into the top corner of the goal from the edge of the penalty area.

With 55 minutes gone, the ball arrived at the feet of Spender, who looked up and spotted Byrne in the middle, searching for his hat-trick. The number 2 tried to pick out the striker, but the cross was under hit and was easily cleared by the Llanelli defence.

Just three minutes later though, the number 21 was celebrating again. After the visitors struggled to get the ball clear, Simon Spender sent a strong header back across the penalty area from the right. And waiting in the middle was Byrne, who pulled off a spectacular bicycle kick to put the ball past the keeper and complete his hat-trick. 3-0.

Introduced as a second-half substitute, Greg Draper had the ball in the back of the net soon after. He tapped home after receiving from Mullan, but the assistant referee deems the ball to have already crossed the line and gone out of play.

But Saints’ fans didn’t have to wait too long for that fourth goal. Jon Routledge tried his luck from the edge of the area, stinging the palms of the keeper with his shot. Jamie Mullan collected the rebound, before clipping the ball to the back post. It was another substitute this time, Dean Ebbe, who found some space to head the ball home and make the score 4-0.

That wasn’t the end of the scoring though and Draper did eventually get his goal. Again, it was Routledge who attempted a shot from the edge of the area. The effort appeared to be going wide, before The Saints’ number 9 stuck out a leg and diverted the ball past the goalkeeper to make the score 5-0.
