The New Saints’ European campaign came to an end at the Racecourse Stadium, following an 8-0 UEFA Europa League aggregate defeat against Bulgarian champions Ludogorets Razgrad.

Having already lead 5-0 from the first leg, the visitors added a further four goals with a 4-0 win on the night, as they advanced to the play-off round comfortably.

Despite a composed start from The Saints, the first chance of the match fell to the visitors, as some good work from Jody Lukoki saw the winger race in down the right. He cut the ball back across the box to Stephane Badji, whose first time effort went wide of the right post.

Then it was TNS’ chance to push forward, as Edwards picked up the ball in the centre of the pitch, before trying to pick out Dean Ebbe. Good defending from Rafael Forster saw the Brazilian defender intercept the pass though.

It was a half of few chances, but Ludogorets made no mistake in taking one of theirs with 36 minutes on the clock. Jakub Swierczok cut inside from the left, before unleashing a fierce, driven effort which left Paul Harrison with no chance at his near post. 1-0.

And almost instantly, the Polish striker could’ve scored another, were it not for a superb Blaine Hudson block.

But Ludogorets soon extended their advantage further, as Jody Lukoki made it 2-0 five minutes after the first. Some good interplay between the visiting forward line saw the ball worked through to the number 22, who showed excellent composure to slot low to Harrison’s left.

It was a goal which left Scott Ruscoe’s side trailing 7-0 on aggregate at the interval.

Despite being well out of the tie, The Saints’ heads didn’t drop, and they came out fighting in the second period. With 57 minutes played, Forster dallied on the ball, allowing Dean Ebbe the chance to dispossess him. The Irish striker took it, before laying the ball off to Ryan Brobbel, who saw an effort float narrowly wide of the far post.

Scott Ruscoe’s side enjoyed more chances as the half wore on, with Jamie Mullan seeing an effort blocked from inside the penalty area.

Brobbel had a couple more chances himself, firstly seeing a free-kick go over the crossbar, before forcing away goalkeeper, Renen, into a smart save, as he pushed an effort around the post.

Ludogorets remained dangerous though, and made their attacking superiority show once more on 77 minutes, as Swierczok grabbed his second and his side’s third, with a header from the edge of the six-yard-box.

The visitors weren’t done there, adding a fourth goal in the second minute of injury time, when substitute, Dan Biton, sent an effort curling past the outstretched Harrison, to condemn The New Saints to a 9-0 aggregate defeat.
