The New Saints booked their place in the fourth round of the JD Welsh Cup in comfortable fashion, with a 9-0 victory against lower ranked Mold Alexandra.

Kurtis Byrne grabbed himself four goals, Greg Draper found the back of the net twice, while Danny Redmond, Blaine Hudson and Kane Lewis all chipped in with individual efforts of their own, on what was yet another high scoring afternoon for The Saints.

Scott Ruscoe’s said were knocking on the door from the opening whistle, and both Greg Draper and Jon Routledge went close inside the opening 10 minutes. It was good work from Elliot Quinllan in the Mold goal though, as he was equal to both efforts.

It took just 14 minutes for the first goal to arrive however, as Kurtis Byrne broke the deadlock from inside the penalty area, after he was picked out by Redmond’s pinpoint pass. 1-0.

The Saints were celebrating again soon after, as this time, provider turned goalscorer. Good link-up play on the edge of the Mold area between Redmond and Draper resulted in the former going through on goal, and the number 10 made no mistake in doubling his side’s lead after 20 minutes. 2-0.

Things got worse for the visitors three minutes after the half-hour mark, when Draper converted from close range to make it 3-0. It was Jamie Mullan who’d done the hard work though, racing in behind the defence, before cutting back a ball which was impossible for the New Zealand international to miss.

A very similar pattern to the first emerged as the second-half started, with TNS enjoying all of the ball. With just three minutes gone, Byrne went close again after spotting Quinllan off his line, but the Irish striker’s effort from distance fell the wrong side of the post.

The fourth goal did come soon after though, as Blaine Hudson made it 4-0 with 54 minutes played. After a corner from the far side had evaded everyone in the penalty area, the number 12 was in the right place to volley home at the back post and put his team well out of sight.

Goals continued to come and Byrne was celebrating again three minutes later. After taking a long ball into his stride expertly, the number 21 beat the goalkeeper with a composed effort into the far corner, giving his side a 5-0 lead.

And just nine minutes later, Byrne completed his hat-trick. After Whitehouse had been fouled in the area, the former Dundalk man stepped up and sent his penalty in off the bar to make the score 6-0.

The Saints were award another penalty in the 72nd minute, as Hudson was brought this time, but unlike the last, Quinllan was equal to it and denied Draper with a good save.

Just two minutes later though, TNS did get their seventh through Kane Lewis. After collecting the ball just outside the penalty area, a good piece of skill saw him beat the defender, before he finished well into the corner of the goal. 7-0.

And there was still time for two further goals, as Draper and Byrne both got themselves on the scoresheet again in the final 10 minutes.

Just like last weekend’s victory against Airbus UK, it was comfortable for The Saints throughout the match and Scott Ruscoe’s side will be eagerly awaiting next week’s fourth round draw.
