The New Saints kept up the pressure on Connah’s Quay Nomads at the top of the JD Welsh Premier League with a convincing 4-0 win against Newtown.

Jamie Mullan scored twice in a manic period of first-half stoppage time, before goals from Edwards and Brobbel made it 4-0 in the second.

First-half

It was a bright start for the visitors, as Chris Hughes’ side worked one or two opportunities for themselves.

Neil Mitchell saw his third minute cross drift out for a goal kick, while Luke Boundford brought a comfortable save from Paul Harrison in the TNS goal.

Scott Ruscoe’s side didn’t start badly themselves though. With 11 minutes gone, Kurtis Byrne got his head on the end of a Jon Routledge cross and although he met the ball well, his effort landed on the roof of the goal.

As usual, it was a patient start from the hosts, as they lookexd to build from the back. Following a good passing move, Tom Holland tried to play a one-two with Aeron Edwards on the edge of the penalty area, but the latter’s return pass was intercepted.

The first real chance of the first-half fell to the Robins in the 39th minute. After a quick counter-attack, Ethan Jones picked out Callum Roberts inside the penalty area, and the ex-TNS loanee brought a good save from Harrison down at his near post.

TNS weren’t to be outdone though. In the first minute of first-half stoppage time, Jamie Mullan collected the ball on the edge of the area, skipped away from an incoming challenge and finished expertly down to Dave Jones’ right. 1-0.

And almost instantly, TNS had a second right from kick-off. The away side gave the ball away and as a long ball forward from Kurtis Byrne beat the Newtown defence, it was Jamie Mullan in the right place again as he lobbed the goalkeeper from the edge of the box, making it 2-0 to The Saints and bringing an end to a manic period of stoppage time.

Second-half

If Newtown were hoping for any second-half respite they were sadly out of luck.

With just 10 minutes played, Aeron Edwards benefited from an expertly delivered Jamie Mullan cross from the right, and the number 23 headed home from the edge of the six-yard-box.

And just like in the first-half, it was two in two minutes. With 56 minutes played, a sloppy Newtown ball was picked up by Edwards, who passed the ball to Ryan Brobbel. The number eight cut inside and fired a sidefooted effort into the bottom right corner.

There were plenty of chance for more goals as well, as TNS continued with their relentless pressure. In the 63rd minute, Newtown defender Kieran Mills-Evans sliced a clearance on the edge of his six-yard-box and it came so close to landing in the back of the Newtown net for an own goal.

There was more great work from Jamie Mullan too. Inside the penalty area, the number 14 made space for a shot, before forcing Jones to spill a save. The follow up effort was blocked though and the ball was scrambled clear, denying the TNS midfielder a hat-trick.

The chances didn’t stop there either. With 77 minutes gone, Ryan Brobbel carried the ball forward, before spotting Jones of his line. He tried to chip the goalkeeper and his effort was inches away from making it 5-0 to TNS and giving him his second goal in the process.

Four nil was how it did finish though, which means the Saints now have scored 18 goals without reply in the last four matches.
