The New Saints got their Phase Two campaign off to the perfect start with a 5-0 victory against Newtown.

Second-half goals from Greg Draper (2) and Jamie Mullan added to first-half Ryan Brobbel and Jack Bodenham strikes, as Scott Ruscoe’s side ensured they kept up maximum pressure in the title race.

First-half

TNS could’ve found themselves a goal behind inside two minutes. A stray back pass from Simon Spender played Nick Rushton in behind the defence, presenting him with a one on one chance with Paul Harrison.

The captain did brilliantly well though to rush out and close the angle, forcing the Robins’ striker to run the ball out for a goal kick.

Scott Ruscoe’s side soon found their feet though. With 15 minutes played, Ryan Brobbel stole the ball off the toes of Newtown defender Kieran Mills-Evans, before racing in behind the away defence. The number eight made no mistake with his finish, as he drove an effort across the goalkeeper and into the far corner of the goal. 1-0.

Chances continued to come for The Saints as the half progressed, as both Jamie Mullan and Danny Redmond had opportunities to score. A long, searching ball forward almost picked out Mullan, but the number 14 couldn’t read the flight of it and it bounced harmlessly into the arms of a grateful Jack Perry in the Newtown goal.

And with 32 minutes played, it was Redmond’s turn. After collecting the ball roughly 25 yards out from goal, the former Hamilton man unleashed a powerful, right-footed effort towards goal, which took a great save from the stand-in keeper Perry to turn it around the post.

The advantage was eventually doubled just seconds before the half-time whistle. A Ryan Brobbel free-kick caused problems in the middle of the penalty area, before it was turned into the back of the net. There was initial confusion as to whether Hudson or Bodenham had grabbed the goal, though it was eventually clear that the Cardiff City loanee had scored his first for the club. 2-0.

Second-half

It wasn’t long after the restart until The Saints were back amongst the goals. With just four minutes played, a fantastic cross from Ryan Brobbel found Jamie Mullan at the back post, where the number 14 was waiting to smash a volley past the goalkeeper and add a third for TNS. 3-0.

Newtown continued to struggle with The Saints forward line and Kurtis Byrne had a fantastic chance to add a fourth Saints goal. A slick passing move from Scott Ruscoe’s side, the ball made its was to the Irish striker on the edge of the six-yard-box. Byrne sent a powerful effort towards goal, but it was fantastic defending from Newtown’s Craig Williams, as he raced back to block the shot on the line.

With his side in firm control, The Saints’ boss opted to bring on January signing Billy Whitehouse for his TNS debut, as he replaced goal scorer, Jamie Mullan, with 64 minutes played.

It was another substitute though, who added The Saints’ fourth. After poor defending from the away side, Greg Draper collected the ball, before racing through one on one with the visiting goalkeeper. The New Zealand international made no mistake though, as he showed great composure to place the ball beneath the goalkeeper. 4-0.

The action wasn’t over there though, as Draper got himself on the score sheet once more. Yet again, a great Ryan Brobbel cross from the right found the number nine on the edge of the six-yard-box, allowing him to tap home for an easy finish, and give his side a 5-0 victory against a disappointing Newtown side.
